Disclaimer: This guide is intended as a helpful “how to”. dotTech and its writers are not responsible for any gain or loss (including but not limited to bricked devices) incurred as a result of following this guide. Root your device at your own risk. Rooting may void your warranty. Downgrade from Jelly Bean at your own risk; it may void your warranty or result in a brick.

Requirements

This root guide is for the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx HD (XT926). This root method requires for your Droid RAZR Maxx HD to be on Android 4.x Ice Cream Sandwich but you will be able to upgrade to Jelly Bean 4.1.x without losing root. If you are already on Jelly Bean, we will show you how to downgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich, root, then re-upgrade to Jelly Bean without losing root.

Before We Begin

PART 1

Before you can proceed further, you need to know if your Droid RAZR Maxx HD is on Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean. You can find out by going to ‘System settings’ -> ‘About phone’. If ‘Android number’ is 4.0.x, then you are on Ice Cream Sandwich. If ‘Android number’ is 4.1.x, then you are on Jelly Bean.

If you are on Ice Cream Sandwich, skip to ‘Step 2′ below. If you are on Jelly Bean, you need to downgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich before you can root. You will be able to re-upgrade to Jelly Bean after rooting and still keep root.

UPDATE: There are some reports that the latest Jelly Bean OTA for the Droid RAZR Maxx HD does not allow you to downgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich without a soft brick. So proceed at your own risk if you have the latest Jelly Bean OTA for Droid RAZR Maxx HD.

To downgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich, do the following:

Note: This will delete all your settings, files, and data! Proceed at your own risk.

  • Be sure that your Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx HD is fully charged and that you have your USB cable ready
  • Download DROID_RAZR_HD/DROID_RAZR_HD_Utility1.10.zip [3] on your computer and extract it.
  • Install Motorola USB drivers [4] on your computer, if you haven’t already.
  • Put your phone in USB debugging mode (System settings -> Developer options -> check USB debugging).
  • Turn your phone off.
  • Once your phone is off, you need to boot into Fastboot Mode. To do this, hold the Power, Volume Down, and Volume Up buttons at the same time and continue to hold until a menu appears on screen. When the menu appears, use Volume Down button to scroll to ‘AP Fastboot’ and press the Volume Up to select it and enter Fastboot Mode.
  • Connect your phone to your computer via USB.
  • Go to your computer and find where you extracted the contents of ‘DROID_RAZR_HD/DROID_RAZR_HD_Utility1.10.zip’ and run the .BAT file you find in there.
  • You should see this on your screen:
    1. Fastboot Restore 0.6.25 (ICS 4.0.4 Official Software)
    2. Root for ICS 4.0.4 by djrbliss (motofail2go method)
    3. Install Voodoo’s OTA Rootkeeper App by supercurio
    4. Install Safestrap 3.05.17 App by Hashcode
  • Select the first option, ‘Fastboot Restore 0.6.25 (ICS 4.0.4 Official Software)’, by typing in the correlated number (i.e. 1) and pressing ‘Enter’ on your keyboard.
  • Now wait while the program does its work. This will take a few minutes, so be patient.
  • Once done, your device will reboot and go to homescreen. Go ahead and enter the “1111” on the dial pin to activate service.

You’ve now downgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich. You can proceed to ‘Step 2′ below.
