It looks like there might be room (and excitement) for another mobile OS. It’s either that or Geeksphone stocked a very limited amount of the first Firefox OS phones to go on sale, the Keon and the Peak.

Both smartphones, which are initially being targeted at developers went on sale earlier today. Within the day, however, Geeksphone announced that due to “great demand,” both models are currently out of stock. If you were looking forward to giving the new OS a shot, fret not, they also mentioned that the online sale will resume within a couple of hours.

The Keon is priced at $119 and the higher specced Peak is going for $194. Here are the full specs of each phone:

Keon:

  • CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 7225AB 1Ghz.
  • UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA).
    GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (2G EDGE).
  • Screen 3.5″ HVGA Multitouch.
  • Camera 3 MP.
  • 4 GB (ROM) and 512 MB (RAM).
  • MicroSD, Wifi N, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR, Radio FM, Light & Prox. Sensor, G-Sensor, GPS, MicroUSB.
  • Battery 1580 mAh.

Peak:

  • CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 8225 1.2Ghz x2.
  • UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA).
    GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (2G EDGE).
  • Screen 4.3″ qHD IPS Multitouch.
  • Camera 8 MP (back) + 2 MP (front).
  • 4 GB (ROM) and 512 MB (RAM).
  • MicroSD, Wifi N, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR, Radio FM, Light & Prox. Sensor, G-Sensor, GPS, MicroUSB, Flash (camera).
  • Battery 1800 mAh.

While they might not seem like heavyweights in terms of their raw power and spec sheet, the real draw here is the new Firefox OS. Now that it’s starting to make its way into people’s hands, we’ll find out if it’ll actually take off — even as a niche OS — or if it’ll be buried by the current juggernauts in the mobile space, iOS and Android.

Just in case you haven’t seen the Firefox OS in action, here’s a video you can check out:

Can it run Android? :) Sorry couldn’t resist.

The prices are actually pretty good for the specs – considering there are no contracts. I might have been tempted to get one, if I’d known.

Enrique, you should post these things before they’re sold out, or even better just before they go on sale – that’s what dottech should be known for. :)
