Yahoo! shutting down Mail Classic, forcing users to switch to new Mail version which scans emails for ads

Starting today, Yahoo! is discontinuing their Mail Classic and is requiring all mail users to switch to the new version of mail and accept a TOS/Privacy Policy update that allows the company to scan your emails to “deliver product features, relevant advertising, and abuse protection.” You are able to opt out of the ads, but your emails will still be scanned. The only way to opt out of your emails being scanned is switching to another email provider.

Yahoo! launched this new version of Mail back in december, with the announcement of discontinuing the Classic version in April. Yahoo! didn’t mention anything about the new privacy policy until it began sending emails to Classic users about making the switch. There’s a question in the Help Center “Do I have to upgrade to the new Yahoo! Mail?”

“Beginning the week of June 3, 2013, older versions of Yahoo! Mail (including Yahoo! Mail Classic) will no longer be available. After that, you can access your Yahoo! Mail only if you upgrade to the new version. When you upgrade, you will be accepting our Communications Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. This includes the acceptance of automated content scanning and analyzing of your communications content.”

So you’ll have to upgrade this week, or use another email provider. At least you can opt out of the ads though. Do you think this is a good move for Yahoo!?
