E3 game spotlight — Dragon Age (III): Inquisition

DA3_Concept_3

Originally titled Dragon Age III: Inquisition, it appears the III has dropped from the title altogether. It will be the third iteration in the series, introducing a lot of more traditional RPG mechanics like armor and character customization (followers).

System: PS3, Xbox 360, PC, PS4, Xbox One

Apparently, Dragon Age III is going to involve some kind of cataclysmic event. The game is being developed with DICE’s Frostbite 2 technology, and according to developers will offer a whole slew of new gameplay mechanics. New features like armor and follower customization, more expansive world environments, AI reactivity to the player and obviously better visuals will appear.

Interestingly enough, that’s also Morrigan narrating the trailer, and she even reveals herself at the end. If you never played the other titles in the series, Morrigan appeared in the first game and even got her own expansion for the original title. She was a pretty alluring blood witch, that added quite a bit of depth to both the story and universe of Dragon Age: Origins.

Apparently, the circle of Mages has rebelled and the Templar order has broken apart. The world is faced with Civil War and an unseen force is pulling the strings. The player will take control of a “rogue, warrior or mage,” and fight to bring peace to the land all over again. So, it’s pretty much the same thing as the first two games albeit in a slightly different context. That’s not a bad thing though, at all.

While I didn’t think Dragon Age II was as bad as everyone makes it out to be, I would like to see the third title in the series make a return to the original game’s roots. DAII was based more on action and fast-paced combat, whereas DA:O was focused more on strategy and tact.

Either way, it will be interesting to see what Bioware comes up with this time around. Any RPG lovers out there? What about Dragon Age fans?
