Awesome Back to the Future-style hoverboards will (might) come in 2015

A new project has cropped up on Indiegogo, which is a crowdfunding platform much like Kickstarter, that proposes an actual hoverboard device. Remember those awesome hoverboards from Back to the Future III that saw Marty McFly cruising just above the ground skateboard style? Yeah well, if this project is successful then that’s exactly what we’ll have in the real world.
Of course, the description on the Indiegogo page begins with “probably impossible … but certainly worth a try!” Although that quote isn’t exactly the most promising thing to hear, it is inspiring to see a company trying to do something a little unorthodox. Then again, it will be even more inspiring if Haltek Industries can take the $1 million they’re asking for and actually develop said hoverboards.
Haltek claims “the world needs a Hoverboard,” and I tend to agree. Considering the way some people drive grounded vehicles though, the low airways might become a dangerous place too.
If all goes well, Haltek aims to release the product in Q3 2015. It includes the hoverboard and a unique smartphone app that allows users to control the board and configure various settings and options. If no hoverboard is actually created, then the company will provide a website complete with information about all of the hoverboard prototypes and any research associated with them. I’m going to make a guess that the hoverboard app will probably allow folks to take a look at some of those prototypes, as well.
Backers who pony up pledges of $10,000 or more will be “one of the first in the world to own a real working hoverboard.” Because they can’t guarantee that an actual working prototype will be available by the projected launch date, there’s no telling when backers of that caliber will actually be able to own one. A $10 pledge will net users access to the “development center” on the project’s website. The development center must be the prototype and research data previously mentioned.
For the project to be greenlit, Haltek needs to reach the $1 million funding mark by August 27th. As with any crowdfunding platform, if the goal is not met then no money will be afforded to the company.
What do you think fellow dotTechies? Is it just a pipe dream? Let us know in the comments !
