Microsoft releases Xbox Music app for iOS and Android, web version adds free streaming

Microsoft has announced that their Xbox Music service is expanding. The company is introducing mobile apps for both Android and iOS, as well as adding a free streaming option for its web player. Adding these new options puts the service in a better position to compete with the likes of Spotify and Pandora, services which the company actually mentions by name in its announcement:

A lot of people use multiple music services to get the songs and albums they want.  Does this sound familiar?  You’re listening to Pandora and bookmark a song you love. Later, you open Spotify and use your subscription to listen to the song over and over again on repeat. And then you use iTunes or Amazon to purchase the song for your own collection that wasn’t available for streaming.  We’ve all been there.

To solve this problem, last year my team introduced Xbox Music, an all-in-one music service that gives you the independence to stream music for free, subscribe to all the music you want or download to own your favorite songs.  And it’s all integrated across your tablet, PC, phone and TV.

Although they make it sound a little more complicated than it really is, they have a good point about having a service that can basically do it all. The only other service that is doing something comparable would be Apple’s iTunes Radio, which has yet to officially launch.

With having 30 million songs available and finally putting out mobile apps, Xbox Music just got a little more competitive. You can download the apps and access the web version of Xbox Music below:
