In response to Apple’s 64-bit A7 processor , Samsung is also going to include a 64-bit processor in their next generation smartphone. In an interview with Korea Times, Samsung’s mobile business chief Shin Jong-kyun said: “Not in the shortest time. But yes, our next smartphones will have 64-bit processing functionality.”
Shin is also aware that Apple’s desire to “boost” its marketshare in China and Japan. Apple recently announced that the they will supply the iPhones to Japan’s largest carrier NTT Docomo, and they have received a license for the iPhone to run on China Telecom’s TD network.
It is no surprising move by Apple. In the Q2 2013, the Cupertino company only managed to sell 3.4 million, meaning they only acquired 5% of the market share. In the same period, Samsung has sold more than 15 million phones, achieving a 19.4 percent share.
Shin said in the report “Samsung understands that Apple intends to boost its mobile business in China, as well as in Japan, meaning that we should try harder in these countries.”
In addition to the 64 bit processor, the Korea Time also cites that Samsung was authorized to integrate time-division duplexing (TDD) LTE technology and that the company will release devices that support TDD-LTE and FDD-LTE in China.
It still remain unclear when and which smartphone will feature the 64-bit processor – probably the Galaxy S5? More importantly, will the next version of Android, aka KitKat, support 64 bits? The answer to that question remains unknown. We are gonna have to wait till Google announce Android 4.4 later this year.
