If you’ve been anywhere near the internet today, you might have heard that a little game called Grand Theft Auto V just came out. The game is the latest in Rockstar’s series of open-world action games, and is reportedly the most expensive video game ever made. Because we live in a world where everything needs a companion smartphone app, GTA V has its own too!

The app is called iFruit and in its description, Rockstar pokes a little fun at the obsession over apps and technology:

How would we survive without apps? Apps can transform your mobile device into essential tools like a harmonica, disco ball or convincing moustache. Somewhere out there is the perfect storm of touchscreen technology to fix everything that’s wrong with your life. And maybe all you’re missing is the iFruit app. Maybe not. At least you’ll have something to keep you entertained while your significant other prattles on endlessly about their day.

In terms of actual functionality, the app does some pretty neat things. You can access the game’s car customization shop where you can make a number of modifications such as new paint jobs, engine, wheels and even a custom license plate. After you make your modifications on the app, your car will be ready to go the next time you log onto your game. iFruit also gives you the option of training and feeding Chop, the same dog you’ll be interacting with in the game’s story. The way Chop is treated will directly affect the way he behaves in the game.

iFruit is currently only available on iOS, but Rockstar says that it’s coming soon to Android, Windows Phone, PlayStation Mobile and PlayStation Vita.

If you’re a gamer and haven’t picked up your copy yet, what are you waiting for? The hype is apparently justified. And if you still don’t quite get what Grand Theft Auto V actually is, don’t worry, this video should help:
