CryptoSeal ends VPN service due to fear of US government data demands

2013-10-26_082016

Virtual Private Networks, or VPN, is supposed to give you that added sense of security when you are online. When your route your internet browsing through a VPN server you encrypt the connection making it harder for hackers to obtain your information. Or so it would seem. CryptoSeal VPN has recently announced that they will no longer offer their services to regular consumers. (VPN services to business will continue.) The company’s reason: they fear government intrusion.

The company hasn’t been asked, as of yet, to hand over decryption keys for any of its customers but the possibility is there. The company, when asked, referred to the email service Lavabit which chose to shut down rather than comply with government ordered monitoring. The company believes that its customers’ privacy far outweighed the financial gains.

If CryptoSeal continued offering consumer based VPN services there is no guarantee that the NSA would require them to hand over information. The mere threat of the possibility made the CEO take a closer look at what was at stake. He determined the legal implications would make them unable to continue financially.

Due to different regulations on business services versus consumer services CryptoSeal is going to continue their business services. For those consumers who had a CryptoSeal account, all information that may have been recorded has been destroyed and all cryptokeys have been zero filled.

If CryptoSeal can find a way to protect the privacy of their consumers and still abide by US government laws, should the NSA come knocking, they will reopen the consumer side of their business.

[@Louis] I not sure i agree with you. Terrorism could not exist without the news media. It’s an attempt to change a society, usually the government part, by causing the people to force the change through fear. It’s not bad enough that it’s completely ineffective, but it usually has exactly an effect opposite to what is intended. People give up freedoms for security instead of insisting on more freedoms.

That said, I don’t know that we can classify terrorism as a crime instead of war and here’s why. First, far too many terrorists are funded and trained by governments that support them. Many of those governments were terrorists before they took power and it’s an effective way to attack a government you hate without getting into a war you can’t win. Second, It is often an attack by a foreign interest (governmental or not) on the people of a country, the exception being home grown terrorists who are often sponsored by other interests anyway.

My personal view is that we are too wishy/washy about it. We “dignify” terrorism by saying it is political when in fact it’s the exact opposite of political.

Terrorism trials should be one of two things. Either treat them as war crimes with a military trial, or try them as the crime they really are, Murder, mass murder, arson, etc, whatever crime is committed.

This article is about government spying though, and I applaud CryptoSeal for their decision.

Why close down ? Just relocate & reincorporate outside the USA, to another jurisdiction that’s not authoritarian. And to make their point, score a 2 in 1 by choosing a low tax jurisdiction on top of it.

The only way it seems that are left to reign in the runaway US Gov’s leaning to fascism under the excuse of “a war on terrorism”, would be for businesses to take away their tax revenue base legally, and deny them jurisdiction over anything else.

To note : There’s no such thing as a “war” on terrorism — war happens between countries, and are declared (by Congress), not by Executive Order.

“Terrorism”, is to commit a deed of terror — it is not an act of war, but a crime. No country can literally go to “war” against crime — that’s just a figure of speech, but the American public had been hoodwinked into thinking this to be an actual (perpetual !) war. Very convenient for the Halliburton and Blackwater etc Corporate owners, and those in Congress that benefit in “campaign contributions” as part of the loot.

To call it a “war” is just more bs from the White House, intended as a cover for unlimited power, and unlimited plundering of the Treasury, and thus of the American people, straight to the pockets of Corporate America and their sponsors, the Bushes, Cheneys, Rumsfelds, Clintons, Obamas etc.

With the changing demographics, ever increasing debt, steadily increasing unemployment, constant inflation of the money supply and consequent destruction of the USD, increasing irrelevance of Congress and increasing authoritarian rule by the White House Administration (regardless of Party — they all follow the same script, and cover it up by fake shows of standoffs), deteriorating education and a disastrous medical dispensation, America is descending into neo-feodalism, and will be a third world country within 2 decades.

Your young people are dying fighting unnecessary wars, and your jobs and money are being destroyed, all to fatten Corporations and their lackey politicians’ pockets.

America as a country and nation has at this point lost the respect of almost every other country in the world, even that of its closest allies. The 100 year experiment is over, and it’s been exposed as the corruption of every level of society that it is. Nevertheless, most of us still believe the USA can become strong again, a free land once again, the land of opportunity — the country one would want to go to, not the one to move away from.

The American people must break the current Federal Government, by restoring political power to the different States, as the Framers of your Constitution intended, and use the State’s constitutional rights to the nullification of excessive Federal powers.

It will require a massive re-education and information campaign across all States, made hard by the fact that the opponents of the American people , i.e. Corporations, own the media — however taking a page from Obama’s book, and using social media etc, it can be done — just say : Yes we can (bring the Administration down) !

PS : Take another look at these words, as applicable to US entities, in the heading of this article, it speaks for itself : “… due to fear of US Government …”
