March 18, 2010 76 Email article | Print article

Two week ago (wow… it has been a really long time since I have posted on dotTech) I introduced a dotTech Exclusive promotion giving away 20 licenses of Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite. As I mentioned in the earlier post, the promotion works in two parts; so in that regard, is this part 2 of the promotion (or, in other words, the part where you can throw your name into the hat to try to win a license).

Here is a recap of what Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite is and what it does:

(Click on image to view list in full.)

If you would like to win a license of Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite, follow these simple instructions/guidelines:

  • If you want to be eligible to win one of the licenses, you must post a comment below. In the comment you must post answers to the following questions:
  1. What you used (or will use) Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite for?
  2. What is your favorite feature in Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite?
  3. Are there any aspects of Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite that can be improved (bug fixes, more features, interface enhancements, etc.)? If so, please explain.
  4. If you were in the market looking for a hard drive management software, would you pay $49.95 to purchase Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite? In other words, do you think $49.95 is a fair price for this software? If not, please specify the price you would prefer.

Anyone that does not post answers to all of the four questions will be disqualified.

  • 7 licenses are reserved for dotTech donors, authors, and artists. If you fall in this 5 license reserve category, please specifically state so in your comment (i.e. say “I am a donor” if you are a donor, etc.), otherwise I may not know. Also if you are a donor, please be sure to use the e-mail you donated with in your comment (do not post your e-mail in public, just use the e-mail in the “e-mail” form when posting a comment) so I can confirm.
  • 13 licenses can be won by anyone.
  • I reserve the right to award specific people licenses if I feel they have helped foster the dotTech family by being very active (the people who fall into this category is at my sole discretion).
  • You may only enter once and only win one license. Anyone that tries to enter more than once will be disqualified.
  • By entering this drawing, you give me the right to pass on your e-mail to Paragon Software (they will be the ones distributing the licenses).

When posting a comment, please make sure you enter an e-mail that is 100% valid and an e-mail you will check because the licenses will be distributed via e-mail by me. If you win and don’t have a valid e-mail or an e-mail you don’t check, your license will go to waste. However, please don’t post your e-mail in your comment! You should never post your e-mail on a public form. Just enter the e-mail you want to be contacted at in the “E-mail” field when writing your comment – I will be able to get your e-mail from there. Or if you are a registered dotTechie, just post a comment normally and I will be able to find your e-mail.

The winners of this giveaway will be announced after the giveaway has ended in 72 hours, or on Sunday March 28, 2010.

    AOA Ashraf
Thanks for this amazing offer. Count me in too. Here are my answers

    1. What you used (or will use) Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite for?

Repartition my HDD for dual boot (Windows 7 & Ubuntu). I will also love to use backup feature.

    2. What is your favorite feature in Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite?

WinPE based CD and ability to restore to dissimilar hardware.

    3. Are there any aspects of Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite that can be improved (bug fixes, more features, interface enhancements, etc.)? If so, please explain.

It is so much well programed that I didn’t find any problem during my free usage, although I haven’t tested all it’s features (there are so many possibilities).

    4. If you were in the market looking for a hard drive management software, would you pay $49.95

$49.95 is fair price for such a good programmed software which provide all possible hard disk management features, but as a customer (economic problems) I might pay $29.95 happily.

Your “everyone stand on one foot, stick your thumbs in your ears, and sing “Mommy May I” and MAYBE I’ll show you what I have behind my back” routine is just as tiresome as your twin prick brother at “4 free on internet”. Grow up and get some character.

    Hello dotTech
I would like to throw my name in the hat, as you say it.
I have been tested Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite, and this is what i have for your 4 questions.

    1. What you used (or will use) Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite for?

    Answer:
I will use Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite for Partitioning and backup.

    2. What is your favorite feature in Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite?

    Answer:
Well, compared to my old version of HDM v8, i like the smart backup wizard for easy backup of mail, mediafiles, documents.
And the new option for P2P adjust OS (haven’t testet it yet). And the backup capsule.

    3. Are there any aspects of Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite that can be improved (bug fixes, more features, interface enhancements, etc.)? If so, please explain.

    Answer:
    File transfer wizard:
The window was too small, I could only see a part of the “map network Drive”-icon.
no maximize icon, you have to drag the window larger.

First thing that strikes me is that you can only copy 1 thing at a time to the clipboard.
Also there is no sorting of the clipboard column. it makes it hard to get a decent overview.
I think it would be a lot more userfriendly if you could put v-marks infront of what you wanted to backup.
that way you only have to push “copy to clipboard”-button (green arrow) once.
And also if the clipboard was sorted in a tree-like manor just as on the Source side.
Again with v-marks with different colours. lets say gray v-mark for partial selected folder and files,
and blue v-mark for all folders and files.
Just as in the smart backup wizard. why not here?

    Back up files:
I found a 2 small bugs in the full scale launcher when using the file backup wizard.
I created a file on my desktop.then backed it up using the schedule (once a day) by running the scheduled Task.
I then shifted to the tab called Archives. but my newly created backup was not there. I pressed the refresh button, still no luck.
Then I started the restore wizard, still there was no archive of mine. I clicked the “switch to file view” and browsed for my backup file,
found it, and finished the restore wizard. Only then came my backup up on the “Archives tab”.
Surely this is a small bug.

    For Bug no 2.
By creating a filebackup as mentioned above, it creates a folder with a name that has a date_time_year-name.
Inside that folder is your backupfile.
If I Delete an archive from within the “Archive tab” in HDM2010, and marked it to delete the file also and remove it from my archive list,
it deletes the archive file but not the date_time_year-folder, which then is left empty.

    Smart Backup Wizard:
it is truly a step in the right direction.
shortest inteval is 1 day. why not hours ?

    Wiping:
    (using the express mode):
only has 1 erasing type us DoD 5220.22-M. I think is is to little to choose from.
I cannot see if it only overwrites 3 (C) or 7 times (C and E).(appears to be only 3 times)
Why not in include gutmann’s (overwrites 35 times) ?
But a good thing in here, that you can choose to make your own. but you can only set 4 parameters, which i think is to little.
When using the full scale launchers “wipe Disk or Partion”-button it can do the same,
but if you rightclick on a partition and choose wipe, you can only wipe using 1 value.
Why not the same way as above ?

    Change cluster size:
The program was unable to change cluster size after the creation of the partition.
Update: it appears that you need the pro edition to do that.
I’m using an old 8 series of HDM (it does not support win 7), it can do it.
    This would have been nice.

    on my wishlist:
A way to browse a filearchive (maybe mounting an archive) and restore selected files within that archive.
You can choose “restore file from archive”, but it only allows you to select 1 file at a time.
And most importantly, it does not allow you to restore files to its original folder/folders.
And it misses the v-marking option, just like the smart backup wizard has.

    4. If you were in the market looking for a hard drive management software, would you pay $49.95 to purchase Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite? In other words, do you think $49.95 is a fair price for this software? If not, please specify the price you would prefer.

    Answer:
With this tool you basically get a partitioning tool and a backup tool. Both types of tools, you can find for free, but Paragon has put them together in 1, and added some extra features like P2P adjust OS, bootmanager, backup capsule, just to name some.
Besides Paragon has been around for while, which means that their products has been thoroughly tested. And for a quick service. For this I would pay 30-35 $.

    Thank you

Note: There is no field to leave an email address today even though I am logged in….:-(….My user name is janetb

    I have
    Paragon Drive BackupPersonal Edition v.9.0,
    Paragon Drive BackupProfessional V. 9.0,
Paragon Drive COPY 9.0 Personal SE,
Paragon Partition Manager 2009 Special Edition, and
    Paragon Backup & Recovery V10.0……
I would LOVE to be able to get rid of all/most of them and have one Paragon program……! Thus I would love to have Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite….

Since I was afraid that if I installed the Suite, I might lose my GOATD and dotTech registration of the Paragon programs I already have, I will answer the 4 questions on the basis of studying the 5 Paragon apps I have and comparing the results with the information in A.’s article and the Paragon website on Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite…….

I am an artist (surprised to find that included in the special category with donors and writers…..:-)….). I have 10 years of 2d and 3d graphics files and all my work correspondence, accounts, and records, etc. on an old system. Since my C: is crowded, I moved all my personal files to an external HD and emptied out my D: so that I could repartition to gives more space to C:. That was a couple of years ago. I have been told that it is dangerous to repartition if you are not super savvy, so I have delayed it….. It soulds like this new prog might enable me to repartition without any major screwups (since they are SO wizard-oriented and say the graphic presentation makes things very clear…)…..

Also, I still feel insecure with the backup I have because backup documentation is generally confused. Note that I say ‘confused’ and not ‘confusing’….GFI has admitted that their Help entry on the difference between Differential and Incremental Backup is incorrect (they said they would change it)…..And in Paragon’s KnowledgeBase, they themselves say that “In versions 6.x and 7.x of Drive Backup and Hard Disk Manager, [the feature which is now called Differential Backup] was [then] called Incremental Backup”..!!!!! I think any backup program would do well to remove all traces of these two words altogether and instead name and explain the functions with other words….Paragon has taken the first step in this direction by making ALL drive and partition backups differential and ALL file and folder backups incremental. It is one of the few (the only?) apps where we don’t get to choose whether our backup is differential or incremental, and that is a very good thing….! Other features (with different names) allow us to do different kinds of backups.

This brings me to my next point. In comparing Drive Backup 9 and Backup and Recovery 10, I found that they really do the same things (with almost identical GUI). Both of them backup and restore disks, partitions, files, and folders. Sometimes it looks as though one has features the other one lacks (e.g., Synthetic Backup), but in effect it is just called something else in the other program as a result of rethinking how to present the material….Looking back over all the Paragon products, it seems that there is a great deal of overlap and that Paragon does a lot of work on simply recasting the presentation of the functions in the display so that the processes/features will be better understood, which is just as important as adding new functions. This is why they have so many programs that seem so similar. In spite of the fact that my Professional prog is 9 and my v.10 is a Compact Version, the compact version is better because it is a more recent program with a later version of the same Paragon Base Service Library (see the detailed About page) that appears in all Paragon programs and thus explains things better (more clearly). The Help documentation in the v.9 was apparently from an even older version, as the illustrations did not correspond with the interface. If you combine all this with Paragon’s claim that they are using a new more-graphic GUI to make it difficult NOT to understand what you are doing, that is a huge plus for this company/app series……Thus, for similar Paragon programs, I would always lean towards the newest, regardless of whether it is Professional, or Compact, or Personal, or Free, or whatever, as it will always be based on the results of the latest strides in organizing the huge body of material to be more understandable to more people…..

    To sum up:
    1. I would use Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite for a) long-awaited partitioning, and b) more thorough and more regular backups than what I have been doing.
    2. My favorite feature is the presentation—being able to SEE the concepts graphically.
    3. The main improvemant I would like to see is a non-proprietary backup (if they haven’t included that yet).
    4. I have no idea of what would be a “fair” price…. I can only say that I would probably stick with the free GFI rather than pay $50 because of my grim financial state, unless I came to really love the Paragon Suite after having had the opportunity to use it through this freebie offer…..

    1. Partitioning, and backups.
    2. I love the partitioning and backup features, but I guess my favorite is the fact that there are so many tools in one package.
    3. I’ve noticed no bugs, and the interface is fine just the way it is.
    4. 49.95 seems a fair price for this suite of tools, but of course, lower would be better.

    Thanks Ashraf!

Thanks for the opportunity to win a license for Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 and Welcome back Ashraf!

    1. Partitioning, backups and restore, copying and migration, optimization and defragmentation, wiping.
    2. I love the partitioning and backup features, and the WinPE based CD and ability to restore to dissimilar hardware and the Advanced Recovery Utilities, but I guess my favorite is the fact that there are so many tools in one package
    3. The existing features are already very comprehensive, I’ve noticed no bugs, the interface is fine just as it is.
    4. 49.95 seems a fair price for this suite of tools, its pricing is very competitive with Acronis True Image and worth $49.95 but of course, lower would be better !

    1. What you used (or will use) Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite for? Partitioning, backups and restore, copying and migration, optimization and defragmentation.

    2. What is your favorite feature in Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite? Scheduling backups and backup features, and the WinPE based CD, the Advanced Recovery Utilities, and the having so many useful tools combined in one package

    3. Are there any aspects of Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite that can be improved (bug fixes, more features, interface enhancements, etc.)? If so, please explain. No concerns so far but I have not tried all options as yet.

    4. If you were in the market looking for a hard drive management software, would you pay $49.95 to purchase Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite? In other words, do you think $49.95 is a fair price for this software? If not, please specify the price you would prefer. $49.95 is a much as a normal user would consider to be fair. If it were 39.95 I believe the user would jump at it as the usefulness would exceed the cost factor and sales would be higher.

    1. What you used (or will use) Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite for?
    Mainly backup and restoring.

    2. What is your favorite feature in Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite?
Backup and restore. Paragon Hard disk manager suite 8.5 saved me when Acronis let me down two months ago. Now I don’t dare to skip making Paragon backups. I am also impressed by Paragons documentation and support. Which I can’ say about Acronis any longer.
    3. Are there any aspects of Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite that can be improved?
Make it faster, Paragon is slower than the competitors Acronis and Macrium Reflect. I would not trade speed for reliability though. Also I think that the way backup files are presented in the interface and in Windows Explorer should be improved if possible. The competitors are much clearer. Again the the most important in this kind of software is that you can trust it.

    4. If you were in the market looking for a hard drive management software, would you pay $49.95 to purchase Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite?

I think the price is too high for the common user. I would gladly pay it since it is my insurance for years of work but I do not think Paragon will get a great number of new costumers at that price. I would suggest a 50% reduction.

In answer to the 4 questions, as part of the Paragon license “raffle” (please enter me in it):

    1. General hard drive management, most specifically, hard drive back-up (and restore, if needed) and defragging. Partitioning and partition re-sizing, as needed. Hard drive cloning.

    2. The easy-to-set-and-use back-up scheduling.

    3. I would like to see a comprehensive pop-up help window feature, with detailed information for questions which arise when setting up and choosing options and for use at that time, in addition to a totally separate help file feature–this sometimes can be found in other utility programs and is very handy and helpful, in addition to separate help file information.

    4. Pricing is difficult, as there are many free or low-cost utility options out there. For example, Norton programs often can be found for $10 or free, after rebate. Given these other options, while $49.95 is a fair price, I don’t think that I would want to pay more than $29.95 (or possibly $39.95, which is starting to get high) for a program of this type, and likely would search to see what lower-cost or free options are out there and available.

    1. For defragmenting partitions and ocassionally backups
    2. P2P Adjust OS seems to be cool, but I haven’t tried it yet
    3. New features that would be welcomed: disk surface scan and SMART diagnostics
    4. No, I would buy something cheaper, maybe for about 20$

Wow it let me leave a ocmment this time to try and enter! With the other giveaways I was not able to leave my name or comment and I am registered. Ack I can’t see the questions with this box pop up,, use personally for my PC I am housebound on oxygen and my only contact with the world is via my PC, Paragon has good software, what else? I need a good disk manager or suite since my Vista machine has constant problems causing me to reformat frequently and not having good enough tools to keep my system if that is even possible with Vista in good shape. Constant dirty disk errors even after replacing a HD and running checkdisk and fix, and with errors it will not back up my C drive, did I get them all? Oops and yes I buy good software, that is a common price of good software to me.
    Thanks! Donna

I am a donor. I hope I am not too late with my response because I REALLY would love to win a license!

1.What you used (or will use) Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite for?
I just got a WD My Book World Edition 2TB External Dual Drive for my 2 laptops, 1 desktop, and my kids computers. I will use the Partion Manager to divide the drive and then start the various backups. Even though software is included the WD drive, I would much rather use Paragon’s software suite.

2.What is your favorite feature in Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite?
There is so much to love about this program. I have the other Paragon programs from GOTD but to have them all in one set instead of having to use the programs individually would be great. The Help file is wonderful and makes learning the programs so easy. A huge plus for those of us who are not that computer saavy. (Ashraf, you have been a life saver with your explanations and instructions of all the various programs. Thanks for all the GOTD reviews!).

3.Are there any aspects of Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite that can be improved (bug fixes, more features, interface enhancements, etc.)? If so, please explain.

I don’t know what could be improved or included. My big concern is I downloaded the HD Manager 2010 suite and now all my Paragon programs from GOTD have a warning stating the trial period has ended. I hope this doesn’t mean I lost my free licenses.
If I uninstall this program will the other programs still work?!

4.If you were in the market looking for a hard drive management software, would you pay $49.95 to purchase Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite? In other words, do you think $49.95 is a fair price for this software? If not, please specify the price you would prefer.
I think this is a fair price for everything that is included, especially since Paragon has a really good reputation. Since I know there are free alternatives available, I would be reluctant to spend the money (I am on a tight budget. If this wasn’t the case, I think I would be confident this is a good value.

Yes, please include my name in the hat. ;)

    1) Use for: I need to get a new HD and partition it into OS partition and Data partition for my ol’ Vaio minitower.

    2) Favorite feature – hard to say at this point, but from documentation and images, i would say the completeness and simplicity of the partition information and adjustments.
Also perhaps the ability to change Dynamic disk to simple disk — I made the mistake one time (ONLY!) of creating a dynamic disk when formatting – didn’t know what it was, and had a heck of a time getting it back to being a “Simple” disk.

    3) Improvements. Need to use it first. So far, cannot suggest a particular improvement. But note that when I use products, I frequently send email to developers with my ‘first-use’ evaluations.

    4) I would say that on my low budget, $49 is too much. Perhaps $19.95 would entice me. I know that is probably too low, but that is what I would put it at.

    Thank you for this. :)

    Hi Ashraf,

First, thank you for all you do and thanks to Paragon for great software.
    Ok… Here are my answers:
    1. Managing my hard disk (smile) I have used other Paragon software and found it to be excellent so this integrated package would be great to have.
    2. Partition management.
    3. I have had no problems with Paragon software in the past so bugs are not a concern. Should I note any, I always attempt to provide feedback to the software vendor.
    4. Until the last 6 months I would probably have said yes with some reservation that the price was higher than I would like. $19.95 is a better price point for most software, especially utility software. However, I recently purchased an ipod and am finding the .99 to $2.99 available software to be a terrific deal that is hopefully going to have a huge impact on the industry. Selling millions of programs at a dollar or two makes huge sense for the smaller quality software vendors. I only hope that model shifts into the PC world to bring inexpensive useful software to the masses and provide a good revenue stream for vendors. This program at $0.99 would be terrific… the only problem is finding a conduit for vendors to use… google? … they are smart enough that they are probably already working on it (smile)… or once they see the opportunity to bring more sheep to their flock they would grab it… after all it is all about exposure to the market now.

    Thanks again… John

    1. What you used (or will use) Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite for?
    Partitioning and backups

    2. What is your favorite feature in Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite?
Partitioning. Hands down the best I’ve dealt with.

    3. Are there any aspects of Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite that can be improved (bug fixes, more features, interface enhancements, etc.)? If so, please explain.
I wish that the partitioning would be done entirely in Windows and not require the reboot and GUI for the completion of the task.

    4. If you were in the market looking for a hard drive management software, would you pay $49.95 to purchase Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite? In other words, do you think $49.95 is a fair price for this software? If not, please specify the price you would prefer.
I think it’s a fair price, but cheaper is always nicer!
