The registration link given above is broken.

    http://www2.ashampoo.com/webcache/html/1/trial_step_1_7011_1_USD_vnr.htm

It leads to a 404. So I don’t know whether this Ashampoo program is still available for free.

But not to worry. There are some very good photo editing programs that are freeware.

One such program is Windows Live Photo Gallery. I used it for awhile and liked it.

Then I tried Picasa, which I like even better.

A nice feature of Picasa is that there’s an option to open any file in another program. So you get the best of both worlds: Use Picasa for what it does well, and if there’s something you want that Picasa doesn’t have, simply switch to another program that has it, without having to close Picasa.

Example: I think Irfanview does a better job of “sharpening” than Picasa does. So I use Irfanview for that, and sometimes for quickly reducing a large photo to half size. When I save the file and close Irfanview, the updated file is immediately available in Picasa.

Just tried the trial version of Photo commander 8 and there is no way to import your albums from a previous version of photo commander. I emailed Ashampoo and they confirmed this
Makes upgrading a bit of a drag if you have to recreate all your albums
And I was actually going to pay for an upgrade this time!!

PC has lots of very nice features, but….
I am disappointed in the panorama feature.
It does not stitch photos together, it merely lays photos side by side.
Windows Live Photo Gallery (free) does pano stitch photos.
I am told that  Photoshop Elements has a good pano stitcher.

Lags… have to wait like 5~10 secounds until photo comes up if that’s set as my default picture viewer. Not so good at all… but organization and the other great features are terrific!

Ashampoo products are really quite good. I own the burning software and have paid for a couple of other programs in the past. I picked up a promotional version of PC 6, then PC 7, but never used them extensively for reasons that had nothing to do with how useful they are.

My one complaint with Ashampoo is the endless emails regarding new releases and upgrades, often for weeks at a time. Other than that, I’m sure this is all that it claims to be.

Thanks for the heads-up on the update, Ashraf. I have come to really like this prog a lot. I use it regularly and am always happy with the results. Nice to be able to just update from the prog itself as well, rather than have to reinstall. Thanks again!

    Thanks Ashraf
Just a warning for anyone using the “Create Web Photo Album” feature.
Don’t save your web album into the same directory as your photos as it overwrites your original images with the compressed images it creates. No warning!
Not sure if it does this for the other “album” types, but it would pay to check.

Thank you so much, Ashraf. I had the version 7.0 from your tip-off last time and now upgraded to the new version.  I have to say, this solved a very big problem I was having.  My Canon MP150 printer/scanner has been giving me trouble for quite some time.  I keep getting “Scan Failed” errors and restarting the machine no longer helps.

But this program just did an awesome job scanning my document and making my day!
    ;)
