{rw_good}

  • Straight forward and easy to use.
  • Can convert video (SD and HD) and rip DVDs (from DVD discs and DVD folders).
  • Can bypass DRM protection for DVDs.
  • Supports many input and output video formats.
  • Supports output profiles for various different electronic devices.
  • Allows users to customize output file settings.
  • Allows users to trim videos before converting.
  • Can rip just audio from videos/DVDs.
  • Allows users to automatically turn off computer after conversions have finished.
  • Supports batch processing.

{/rw_good} –>

{rw_bad}

  • Doesn’t allow for proper DVD “backups”: can’t rip DVDs -> .VOB.
  • Lacks basic video editing features, such as crop, add watermark, add subtitles, etc. – can only trim video.
  • Users can’t customize the name of the output file.
  • Drag + drop doesn’t work properly. (Is it just me?)
  • Does not have the option to add an entry into right-click context menu for quick access to the program.

{/rw_bad} –>

{rw_score}
{for=”Ease of Use” value=”9″}With the exception of a few minor annoyances (such as can’t customize name of the output file and no right-click context menu), PCHand Media Converter Pro is extremely easy to use.
{/for}
{for=”Performance” value=”8″}Performs very well; converts at a very good pace, and converts with excellent quality. There are only two problems: 1) There is no ability to do proper DVD “backups” – no ability to do DVD -> .VOB and 2) Lacks basic video editing capabilities such as crop, add watermark, add subtitles, etc. – can only trim.
{/for}
{for=”Usefulness” value=”9″}I can see many people finding this program useful.
{/for}
{for=”Price” value=”9″}Considering the fact that this does video conversions and can rip DVDs, 29.99 is an excellent price (especially considering rival software often charge 20-30 for just video converters and 30-40 for just DVD rippers).

This article is part of the new Rapid Reviews section on dotTech; thus it has no “full review”. Please visit the announcement on Rapid Reviews to learn more about what Rapid Reviews are.

(NOTE: Even though there is no “full review”, all software featured in Rapid Reviews are still held to dotTech standards, and are evaluated fully and graded fairly. And, Rapid Reviews still have the program overview, the good and the bad, ratings, quick verdict, free alternatives, and final verdict; Rapid Reviews just have no full review section.)

This review was conducted on a laptop running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit. The specs of the laptop are as follows: 3GB of RAM, a Radeon HD 2600 512MB graphics card, and an Intel T8300 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor.

FormatFactory

FormatFactory is an excellent file converter which can convert videos, audio files, images and even rip DVDs. In fact, although the developer does not directly state this, I noticed the latest update to FF enables me to rip my DRM protected Jurassic Park III DVD. (I was not able to rip the Jurassic Park III DVD with FF in the past.)

(It is worth noting FormatFactory uses the same MEncoder as the background work-horse that PCHand Media Converter Pro does, so you can expect performance of FormatFactory and PCHand Media Converter Pro to be very similar.)

iWisoft Video Converter

iWisoft Video Converter is another excellent video converter. (It can’t rip DVDs.) Unfortunately, iWisoft Video Converter has not been updated in a while, so you may find the output profiles for electronic devices to be a bit lacking, but nonetheless it converts videos well.

DVDSmith

DVDSmith is a DVD ripping program that allows users to rip DVDs -> .VOB format, so with DVDSmith you can make proper backups of your DVDs. DVDSmith can bypass DRM protection.

{/rw_freea} –>

{rw_verdict2}I really like PCHand Media Converter Pro; it combines video converting and DVD ripping capabilities into one program and performs extremely well. Sure it may not have the basic video editing features (aside from trim) that many other commercial converters have nor the ability to perform proper DVD backups (i.e. can’t do DVD -> .VOB), but how many other shareware converters can convert videos and rip DVDs and still only cost you $29.99? I highly recommend PCHand Media Converter Pro to anyone that wants or needs it.

    I always read your reviews and usually download the software if you recommend it. However I will skip this one because there are so many media converters these days. I must have three different on my computer!

    Anyway thanks Ashraf! Best wishes

    Hi again,

    Something went wrong with including the Download-link in my previous post – orange text in the lower paragraphs…

    The correct download URL is http://www.fileguru.com/HQ-DVD-To-MKV-Converter/download

    and the quote reads

     “HQ Dvd to MKV Converter is powerful and easy-to-use software, It can help you convert video form DVD to MKV with quickly and high quality. With HQ DVD to MKV Converter you can cut any segment of the DVD into MKV. Free download of HQ DVD To MKV Converter 1.01, size 6.89 Mb.”

    I haven’t tried it myself, but as it presents itself as ‘free’ (while most software dealing with this paricular issue are not really cheap), I thought you might want to try it out for yourself ;-)

    Sorry for the inconvenience! I hope everything is OK now.

    Patrick.

    @Unicorn02 #5:

    Interesting problem – which I am fairly convinced Ashraf answered correctly and to which I have no ready answer myself (not techie enough in this paricular field I’m afraid, and not having tested tis program yet –Shame on me!  ;-).

    From your question I (correctly?) gather that you would like a software that converts a complete non-MKV DVD into a MKV DVD that has all the functionality of the original one -not just the video part(s), but also subtitles, soundtracks, navigation capabilities (part of what I think you mean by ‘structure’), i.e. the whole works ànd lossless…

    Also I do not know your level of competence, knowledge, experience etc. regarding MKV and other DVD-related subjects.
    By way of introduction (to myself, mainly!, and perhaps to others as well) I did a quick search and found some usefull background information at
    –         http://www.matroska.org/ (Matroska homepage) and at
    –         http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/codec-pack/mkv (about MKV Codec-pack – download & info)

    However, perhaps the following will be of more practical use to you:
    http://www.fileguru.com/apps/dvd_to_mkv_ripper : HQ DVD To MKV Converter 1.01 [HQ Software]

    Download
     “HQ Dvd to MKV Converter is powerful and easy-to-use software, It can help you convert video form DVD to MKV with quickly and high quality. With HQ DVD to MKV Converter you can cut any segment of the DVD into MKV. Free download of HQ DVD To MKV Converter 1.01, size 6.89 Mb.”

    Success &Greetz,
    Patrick.

    @Ashraf: The nice thing about makemkv.com is that you get a 1:1 contained copy of the whole DVD, but decrypted and as a single file. So it is something like RatDVD,but without recompression. I do not need that personally, but it is good to know that there is a program out there that exactly does this. Most other converters extract/convert single parts of the DVD as individual files and you do not get a wholy contained file that has the complete structure in it.

    Thanks Ashraf,, I do exactly the same as Bernard said ,,Take a look at your reviews first before intallation,, but Ifeel sometimes diappointed searching for your reviews for a very worth while software ,, missing  Ashraf’s review,,To be
    frank,,(don’t feel bad) people say that you get paid for your reviews and you wright for those companies which pays you,(Not a bad thing ,, you have to run your site ,, non? so nothing wrong that you get paid ,, ofcourse it’s a must )
    But is it true ?

    @Unicorn02: I am afraid I am not sure what you mean. PCHand Media Converter Pro can do DVD -> .MKV, but it only converts the video part of the DVD… not the menus.

    Any specific reason you want the menus to be converted?

    @amozai: If it helps, here are my two-cents: PCHand Media Converter Pro doesn’t offer anything “special” over other video converters and DVD rippers. Like other video converters and DVD rippers, it supports many input/output formats, and performs really well. In fact it lacks some features – such as basic video editing features – that other programs have. The main attraction to this software is the fact that it does video converting and DVD ripping in one program, and only costs you $29.99 (of course, if you are getting it for free via GOTD, the price is of no concern to you). Therefore, if you already have a video converter and/or DVD ripper, you have no need for PCHand Media Converter Pro. However, if you don’t have a video converter and/or DVD ripper, PCHand Media Converter Pro definitely deserves a look.

    Thanks so much, Ashraf, for all of your reviews.  They are very helpful (!) in finding good software.  Most of the time, when I’m interested in a GAOTD, I take a look to your comments!
    All the best!!
