REQUIREMENTS

  • The guide is tested on the current Android 5.1 Lollipop software update. We cannot guarantee this guide works with future updates such as the Android 6.0 marshmallow should the Motorola Moto Maxx get another update.

BEFORE WE BEGIN

  • Download the Motorola USB Drivers from our page. If that doesn’t work, you can download the Universal USB drivers by Koush.
  • You need to install a custom recovery on the Motorola Moto Maxx before you can get the device using this guide. You may read how to install TWRP recovery on the Motorola Moto Maxx before starting if you need the custom recovery.
  • Make sure you have USB Debugging Mode enabled on the Moto Maxx. Turn on the smartphone and head to the Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging. By default, the Developer Options menu should be unlocked with the latest Lollipop update; however, you can head to the Settings > About Device > tap the build number 7 times if you need it unlocked.

HOW TO ROOT MOTOROLA MOTO MAX ON ANDROID 5.1 LOLLIPOP

  1. Download the updated SuperSU file to the computer. Do not unzip the SuperSU file.
  2. Connect the Motorola Moto Maxx to the computer.
  3. Transfer the SuperSU (zipped) to the internal storage SD card on the Moto Maxx.
  4. Unplug the Moto Maxx from computer and completely shut it down by holding the Power key until you know it’s off.
  5. Reboot it in the custom recovery mode. You may download the Quick Boot app from the Google Play Store if you are unable to get your device in the recovery mode.
  6. Once you are happy that you are in the recovery mode, tap the ‘Install’ option from the recovery menu.
  7. Browse the SD card for the SuperSU file you prepared earlier.
  8. Confirm you want to install the SuperSU package.
  9. Once the flashing of the SuperSU file is completely, head back the way you came and back to the main recovery menu.
  10. Choose the ‘reboot system now’ option from the menu.
  11. Your Motorola Moto Maxx will now reboot and once it does, you have root access.
