Anyone that wants to upgrade to the latest v5 can get it for a measly $17.99 – yes, only $17.99 for a tool that you will use every day.

Software Description

The following is a description of Sticky Password as per the developer:

Save time with Sticky Password

  • Sticky Password recognizes your password-protected sites and logs you in automatically.
  • One-click form filling! Sticky Password fills in tedious online forms quickly and accurately.
  • Sticky Password integrates with your browser and applications so your passwords and data are always ready when you need them.
  • No more lost or forgotten passwords, Sticky Password gets them right the first time and even logs you in automatically.
  • The Installation Wizard imports your passwords from browsers and other password manager programs on your computer.

Protect yourself against identity theft and online threats

  • Sticky Password creates the strongest passwords possible and manages them for you. With Sticky Password’s password generator, you’re just a click away from another strong password.
  • The database is encrypted with the strongest encryption algorithms available in the industry, including the military-grade AES algorithm.
  • You’ll be protected from phishing scams, because Sticky Password won’t send your login and password to fake websites! Sticky Password knows your sites and won’t enter your login and password into sites it doesn’t recognize.
  • Multiple levels of protection against key-loggers. Sticky Password’s automatic login and form filling ensure that there is nothing for key loggers to record. And the Virtual Keyboard also ensures that not even someone peaking over your shoulder will know what you’re typing.
  • Sticky Password is safer than browsers. When stored in a browser, your passwords can be used by anyone using the computer, and are also more at risk to being stolen by computer viruses than when they are securely stored in Sticky Password’s encrypted database.

Get organized – passwords and website accounts under control

  • Sticky Password puts strong passwords under your control. Your Master Password is the only password you’ll need to remember.
  • Sticky Password fills in all those online forms for you.
  • No toolbars required: located in the title bar, the Caption Button is your access point to Sticky Password functions. No one else has it.
  • Each Sticky Password license includes the Sticky Password Portable Version FREE, so you’ll always have your passwords when you need them.
  • Sticky Passwords supports secure export and other collaboration options.
  • Your password Accounts will be organized the way you want with our enhanced groups.
  • Support for the browsers you use. Sticky Password works with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome* and more, so you’re not tied to any single browser.

dotTech Advice

Sticky Password is a brilliant password manager. If the world was a playground Sticky Password would be playing in the big kid sandbox with the likes of Roboform Pro and Lastpass. Not only does Sticky Password store and manage logins (usernames and password) allowing users to easily login to websites with a click of a button, but it has an “Identities” feature where users can preset first name, last name, address, phone number, etc. and use the identity to quickly fill out forms. However, all password managers can store your logins and many even have the form feature. So what is the big deal with Sticky Password?

For one Sticky Password has excellent browser integration, supporting Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Flock, and SeaMonkey. (Note: Chrome is officially only supported in Sticky Password v5 and Opera is officially not supported at all. However, after installing Sticky Password v4.1, I find it to be fully working in Chrome and partially working in Opera.) Secondly it encrypts all your data, keeping it safe from prying hands (default encryption is AES 256 but you can change that if you want); and users get to control how the data is accessed: Either via password authentication (a master password must be entered), USB authentication (the designated USB drive must be plugged in), or bluetooth authentication (Sticky Password must connect to the designated bluetooth device). Thirdly, Sticky Password can easily be made portable and put on a USB/thumb drive, allowing you to carry your password around with you whenever you want. (All Sticky Password licenses come with portable support, even this Sticky Password v4.1 freebie.) Lastly, and one of my personal favorite features, Sticky Password has no toolbar – it works out of a small button (dubbed the “Caption Button”) placed at the top of your browser.

Anyone that doesn’t already have a password manager should jump on this chance and grab Sticky Password. Take it from a guy who has been using a password manager for almost two years (albeit not Sticky Password – I didn’t know about Sticky Password back then): Prior to using a password manager you may think “they aren’t that special”; but after using a password manager you will never be able to live without it. Anyone that already has a password manager should consider replacing their password manager with Sticky Password if that password manager doesn’t provide the features Sticky Password does, particularly browser integration since many password managers don’t have very good browser integration. (Sticky Password v4.1 can import passwords from Roboform and KeePass while v5.0 adds the ability to import from LastPass.) Anyone that enjoys Sticky Password v4.1 should consider upgrading to the latest Sticky Password v5.0; the upgrade cost is only $17.99 USD (40% off normal price of $29.99) and it quickly pays for itself considering how Sticky Password is one of those programs that you will use every single day.

Lastly, there are two things about Sticky Password I noticed that I would like to caution people about:

  • After installation Sticky Password prompts you to turn off the built-in password managers for browsers that it supports. Doing this is fine because obviously you don’t need the built-in managers if you are using Sticky Password. However, the thing is Sticky Password disables the password managers for browsers – it doesn’t delete the stored usernames/passwords. So if you use the built-in browser password managers, make sure to delete the usernames/passwords from the respective browser after importing them into Sticky Password.
  • By default Sticky Password makes the first login for a website an “automatic login”. For example, if you save a login for Gmail with Sticky Password, Sticky Password will make that login an “automatic login” so whenever you visit Gmail.com that account will be logged into automatically (assuming you authenticated Sticky Password). That is fine and dandy… if you only have one Gmail account. If you have multiple Gmail accounts it becomes near impossible to login to those other accounts because the first account was set to be an automatic login. So, if you have multiple accounts for a website you need to turn off automatic login for the first account before you can save other accounts. To do this right-click on the Sticky Password system tray icon, go to Manage Database, right-click on the login that you want to modify, click on Edit, go to Links and uncheck Automatically activate Account after loading. This only needs to be done with the first account saved for a website because all subsequent accounts don’t have this option automatically enabled.

Here are directions on how people can upgrade from v4.1 -> v5.0:

How can I upgrade to the newest version of Sticky Password?

In addition to the new features we’ve added to Sticky Password 5.0, we know you’ll enjoy the savings when you upgrade. Simply contact us to save 40% when you upgrade your current Sticky Password version to Sticky Password 5.0. (Send us your current registration key (License Key) and proof of purchase to qualify.)

I am not sure why they make it such a pain to upgrade to the latest version with the discount. If anyone else finds it cumbersome to have to e-mail Sticky Password support to upgrade, there is a direct link you can purchase the upgrade from https://store.stickypassword.com/469/?scope=checkout&cart=72390&coupon=LC8-XQA-9PQ. I didn’t post this link in the post above because they aren’t part of dotTech’s promotion — they are available through the promotion Lamantine Software is running with PC-Welt: http://www.stickypassword.de/pcwelt. The promotion was publicly available last month (i.e. not for paying magazine subscribers only – available to everyone who visited PC-Welt’s website) and seems to still be available now, so in my book it is okay to post these links.

Thank you, Ashraf. As usually you do a great job.

Now to the software and the publisher. Giving a version away that since has at least been updated twice is less than generous and honest. All they do is looking for free publicity. I guess its hard to flog something like this for a price of (over here) Euro 23.95 with LastPass being around.

As a comparison, I use LastPass pro, costs me £6.50/year but only because I want to have it on the phone. Sticky Password doesn’t even have that option.

Conclusion, the software might be great, their attitude is not.

@Steve: I respectively disagree. v4.1 may be two versions old but it is still fully functional and an excellent program. Of course the developer is looking for publicity, but that doesn’t mean the program is worthless.

    That said, you are welcome!

P.S. How are you getting 23.95 euros? You can upgrade for $17.99 USD, which should be about 13.5 euros, right?

    @marcoscu: You are welcome!

How does it compare with Roboform?

    5
  6. Ashraf January 4, 2011 at 1:44 AM (comment permalink) -
    Mr. Boss

@Merlin Lenchanteur: Are we talking Roboform or Roboform Pro? If Roboform, then Sticky Password is a thousand times better since Roboform only allows users to store 10 logins. If we are taking Roboform Pro, the comparison is a bit more even: Both Sticky Password and Roboform Pro are terrific password managers. Here are the main differences, as I see them:

    • Sticky Password comes with a portable version that can be put on a USB/flash drive whereas you must purchase a portable version of Roboform Pro separately (Roboform2go).
    • Sticky Password works via a button, drop-down menu, and temporary popup whereas Roboform Pro works via a toolbar (you can turn off the toolbar in Firefox and IE and still use Roboform Pro to fill in logins – I don’t know about Chrome) and a small pop-up window. Both sit in the system tray where they are accessible.
    • Roboform Pro has the ability to work on smartphones (Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, etc.) whereas Sticky Password cannot. However, you must purchase the mobile version (Roboform Everywhere) – it doesn’t come with Roboform Pro.
    • Roboform Pro has an add-on for IE, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari but has a bookmarklet which can be used for all other browsers. Sticky Password also works with IE, Firefox, and Chrome but partially or wholly supports other browsers such as Flock, SeaMonkey, and Opera.
    • Roboform Pro can be used to sync data/logins/etc. over the Internet while Sticky Password has no such option. However, you need to purchase GoodSync or Roboform Everywhere for that.
    • Sticky Password has USB/bluetooth authentication while Roboform Pro does not.

I am sure there are some other differences too but that is what I could think of off the top of my head. The bottom-line: For traditional, password manager usage in Windows both are terrific. Should be noted that both are regularly priced at $30 but with the 40% off upgrade discount Sticky Password costs $18 whereas a Roboform Pro upgrade (from v6 -> latest v7) costs $20.

Last time it was offered from GAOTD I did a thorough test and read a lot of reviews and comparisons…

Now you have the chance to have a normal licence which can be (re-)installed whenever you want.
It a great offer guys! Go and grab it now!

(Ashraf, congratulations once again for your presentation-information of this freebie :-)

I used Sticky Password for several years (GAOTD) with IE on XP and found it very frustrating due to its unreliability….Many times it failed to supply the login info and I had to do it by hand….It also seemed NOT to allow you to look up your password so you could enter it by hand–so I had to keep a full hardcopy list anyway for such occasions. Given all the IE issues dealt with in the 5.x versions—coupled with my experience—I guess I would not recommend 4.x to IE users….. It also did not allow you to export your passwords (or RoboForm didn’t allow you to import?)….Mind you, it was a much older version (from 2007)….

When I moved to Win7 with IE8, I was overjoyed to find that either W7 or IE8 automatically offers to remember logins! And it actually works! (Does anyone know where IE stores the remembered log-in data in a readable form?)

I have always used the Google toolbar for filling out forms.

In spite of my criticisms, I reckon I will download this in case I get other browsers in the future…

    Great and thorough review!

Although Sticky Password is a highly attractive and easy-to-use app, I am no longer using it – and I migrated back to KeePass. Here’s why:

My Linksys wireless devices are configured via browser, and each device is password protected. Some devices require that the user name field be blank (empty), and accept only a password. Oddly, Sticky will not save a login where the User field is empty.

My effort to bring this to the attention of the developers was fruitless. The website user forum is under some form of censorship – they “review” questions/comments before they are posted … and my questions were NEVER posted in the forum. My email question to their support staff was answered 5 days after I sent it – and it was unhelpful to me. There was no solution offered, and no indication of willingness to fix the problem.

Sorry for the rant – but I wanted to share my experiences.

Been using this for quite awhile and it works great for autofilling EXCEPT that its database and interface are horrible compared to KeePass. My solution is to use both; keeping KeePass around when I need to look something up and since SP mostly stays out of the way unless it’s filling in a password, it works quite well.

Re #10, if you don’t need a login name, you can put anything in the Sticky Password login box space and Sticky Password
will ignore it (if you have multiple passwords per item, it’ll present a list of the alternatives).

Re #9, all browsers will offer to save your passwords but the problem is that they aren’t secure and pretty much anyone can access them if they know what they’re doing…that’s the whole purpose of KeePass, Sticky Password, and the others. In fact Sticky Password will offer to disable this capability from your browsers and it’s probably a good idea to allow it to do so.

IE PassView by NIRSOFT is a small password management utility that reveals the passwords stored by Internet Explorer Web browser, and allows you to delete passwords that you don’t need anymore:

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/internet_explorer_password.html

It also tells all about where passwords are stored.

    @Blue:

I second your comment re browsers saving passwords is NOT a good idea! Especially I.E.!

As for Sticky Password, I installed the GOTD offer and find that is one of the few offerings that, in my case, is a definite keeper.

However, I did find one minor issue with it. When trying it out on my online banking, I found it didn’t save the account number, but did save the password. But for me that isn’t a major issue as I didn’t want Sticky Password to store my banking info anyway, it is something I would rather do manually, just for added security.

My thought is that if your User ID (or Bank Account number) is very long, Sticky Password can’t save it.

I used this same version of Sticky Password when it was offered by GotD on 10/20/10, and loved it. However, there was an error message each time I logged in: “Remind_XP.exe Application Error,” which took ~16 clicks before it went away, and I also had to force a shutdown of iexplorer every time I logged off. I finally did a system restore to eliminate these problems.

I communicated this with the company, and was told that the IE issue would be resolved in a future version (I use IE 7) . . . YMMV

Thank you for the Promo. Ashraf and thanks to Lamantine Software for the Giveaway.

Tested Sticky Password v4.1 works well on Firefox (32-bit), unfortunately does not support Firefox’s x64 (Namoroka (64-bit) which is my default web-browser. Do you have any advice on how to get Sticky Password v4.1 to work with Namoroka (64-bit)? If not, that’s ok too…Thank’s again for the promo.

    Hi Ashraf and everyone

I’ve been using this for a while now and found one problem I would like to forewarn others about.

I store all my data in a seperate Data partition and I have Sticky configured from inside Sticky to store the default password database there and to put the backup of the passwords onto my second Hard Disc Drive.

However just a few weeks ago I did a Factory Image recovery which somehow wiped out my Data partition,(don’t ask me how I’ve no idea except that maybe I made a mistake somewhere) and when it came round to reinstalling the backup Image of my windows partition with Sticky on it as I had not yet recreated the Data partition Sticky couldn’t find the database and locked up.

It did give a dialogue box telling about this and prompting me to use the backup but even though the dialogue box showed the address of the database in the Data partition and what seemed to be a browse facility to get to the backup on the 2nd hard disc it wouldn’t let me go there and load it.

I couldn’t get back into Sticky to redirect it to the backup database either because Sticky had locked me out.

Anyway the long and the short was I had to reinstall the data partition then reinstall the system image again and Sticky automatically worked fine. It took a lot of extra time to find out I had to have the Data partition reinstalled first.
