dotTech Advice
Anyone that has followed dotTech for a while knows I am a huge fan of Outpost Firewall: Outpost Firewall has been featured as dotTech’s choice of best free firewall and I personally use Outpost Firewall Pro to protect my computer. Outpost Security Suite (which has a Free and Pro version; Outpost Security Suite Free has replaced the now-depreciated Outpost Firewall Free) is a product that takes Outpost Firewall and builds upon it by adding more features such as anti-virus/anti-malware protection. More specifically, as you can see in the features listed shown above, Outpost Security Suite Pro’s main features are firewall, anti-malware, zero-day threat, web surfing, and anti-spam protection.
If it isn’t obvious by now, let me put it plainly: In my book Outpost Firewall is one of the best, if not the best, firewalls out there. However, I am not as convinced with the anti-malware features of Outpost Security Suite Pro. It is not that the anti-malware features of Outpost Security Suite Pro are crap; they aren’t: Outpost Security Suite Pro continually gets the Virus Bulletin VB100 award, which shows it is a viable option for anti-malware protection. Rather, I feel there are better anti-malware software out there.
As shown in Virus Bulletin’s RAP tests, Outpost Security Suite Pro (which uses Virus Buster’s signatures) is running with the big boys but falls in the middle of the pack as opposed to the top. Of course VB’s RAP tests is only one benchmark; other tests by a different company may paint a slightly different picture. My point is I personally feel more comfortable running Outpost Firewall alongside other anti-malware programs (such as Avast) as opposed to letting Outpost handle all my protection; and the cool thing about Outpost Security Suite Pro is it allows you to do just that. If you don’t want to use all the modules/protection of Outpost Security Suite, you can easily enable/disable the modules/protection you don’t want. For example, with Outpost Firewall Pro I have the anti-spyware and web control modules disabled because I allow Avast to provide that protection for me. This robustness and willingness to play well with others is just one of the reasons why I enjoy Agnitum products.
Overall, to sum up my advice, grab this great freebie while it is available. If, like me, you only want to use Outpost Security Suite Pro for its firewall, you can do that; if you want to use it for all its features you can do that, too.

@Daniel: I don’t know; and why would you want to do that? You are trying to cheat a company that already provides very good freeware version of their software…
@Graham: Please make sure you are doing it properly. It worked for me earlier and I just checked again and it works. Please make sure: 1) You are not using the promotion code as the registration key. The promotion code is only used to get the registration key. You need to use the registration key shown to you after you register 2) You are entering the whole registration key just as it is shown (in the block format it is shown). Simply copy + paste it in. Make sure there are no extra spaces before or after.
Let me know if that helps.
@Ashraf: I did all that from the instructions but it will still not register keep getting incomplete or invalid key error`s
@Graham: Try getting another registration key, see if it works.
@Graham: Also make sure you downloaded from either https://www.agnitum.com/download/dottech/OSS.exe or https://www.agnitum.com/download/dottech/OSS64.exe. Downloads from other places will not work with the registration key.

I have tried Outpost in the past and liked it.Being unemployed/disabled though I tend to use free software If I can get it which is why when the free license I had ran out I stopped using it.But now I get to use it for a year FREE!!! Thank you Agnitum AND Ashraf
FWIW, before I found Avast I was constantly changing my security setup; dissatisfied by either performance, interface or system impact. Since switching to Avast and learning to trust my hardware firewall, I’ve not only stopped this merry-go-round (it’s been over a year since I switched to Avast; a record for me), but I’ve remained *more* virus-free than at any time in the past AND with virtually no performance hit or security program-caused problems.
This new version of Outpost MIGHT be much better than previous versions which were slow, cumbersome, & problem-filled AND it might be better than what I have now, but I will never know: Avast-free and a hardware firewall work just fine for me & I encourage others to try it, as well.
If I understand right, my wireless router acts as a firewall. Why would I need a software firewall too?

This provideds added protection. There are hackers that can bypass a routers firewall.
As I’ve mentioned previously, I’ve been a huge fan of Agnitum’s Free Outpost Firewall for many, many years (going back to the original free firewall.) I have always used it except for the period when it didn’t work in XP. I was never satisfied with any of the other firewalls I tried (except Comodo v. 2.X, but when they upgraded to v. 3.X that ended my satisfaction with it.)
I would highly recommend Agnitum’s Outpost Firewall to everyone. If your happy with it, then keep it, when the 1 yr license runs out and you don’t want to pay to continue then revert to the Free Version.
If you don’t like the paid for version, then try the free version. Trust me you won’t regret it.

just the application rules are a huge reason by itsself to install a software firewall!
(you control/see/block which applications connect in/out to internet. indispensable nowdays)
@Graham: that did not work either so i uninstalled the software after it gave me problems. it is a very hard software to delete from the computer system.
I’ve just started using Outpost firewall after spending months with a Firefox+Vista+Zone alarm issue. When Zone alarm started that scareware nonsense I jumped ship. After the usual period of Outpost “learning” my system I must say I like it, can’t tell it’s running (no impact on my system, and yes it is running, I checked :)).
I’ve suffered no network issues like an intermittent or dropped connection, any alerts are quite infrequent and detailed info is available.
One thing I haven’t tried is the anti-malware scanner, it was disabled on my system due to an incompatibility with AVG, that may have been fixed with an update since so I’ll have to try it.
Overall 10/10, yes I think it’s that good,and I recommend it for everyone. Even if my opinion means zilch I still say grab it while you can :).

I ready to get rid of it, it played nasty with my system and I still haven’t got all my systray icons back!
Like my volume control icon (Windows XP Pro SP3), ever since I un-installed Outpost, I have to…
Control Panel, Sound control and devices, un-click ‘show volume control, click ‘apply’, click ‘show volume
control’ and click ‘apply’ and ‘ok’. It does something to the registry that messes with your computer.
Ashraf, you say Outpost is the best… makes me wonder, it also seemed to slow my internet connection
somewhat. I get better throughput with Comodo! Leo Notemboom said to forget all the stand alone
anti-virus and anti-malware and use the all-in-one Microsoft Security Essentials (I AM NOT pro MS!).
Just curious what you think about Comodo!

I am trying the anti-malware scanner. Scan is 3 quarter finished on an older XP sp3 dell system. It has marked 4 threats which all have the same title “Packed/PECompact” (Packer) what I considered safe…Horizon icon program, JPG2PDF, Wise Disk Cleaner, and Adobe Shockwave. I always trust Ashraf’s opinions but in this case I’m not for sure if I have a problem or if it is reporting false positives. Thanks
