    BDlot is conducting a giveaway of DVD Clone Ultimate. If you are interested you should hurry up because the number of free licenses is limited (10.000).

    About your comment:”… Why the 10 year old player works just fine on every DVD and the new decrypters don’t is beyond me,..”.
    You were comparing two things that are not comparable: playability and copying.
    You can find more (essentials) about DVD copy protection here:

    @3K3 – thanks.

    I use DVD Shrink as my main app because it’s an elegant, one-click solution to make ISOs out of my DVDs, and crank out a new copy when my kids scratch up the current copy (no originals for them, of course). But every now and then DVDShrink can’t handle some of my more popular DVDs (Batman, Star Trek XI, Thor, Captain America, etc). Usually DVDFabDecrypter can handle them, but not this time around.

    I got the WinX DVD Ripper Platinum Thanksgiving Edition to spit out a 6gig CaptainAmerica.VOB file, but other than playing it in PowerDVD (yeah, I’m old school), I’m kinda stuck w/o that IFO file.

    I ended up using the Thanksgiving edition to crank out an MPG file, then used DVDFlick to make an ISO that would play just the one file. I lose subtitles (something I prefer to keep) and all the extras (which I usually don’t care about – I’ll just dig out the originals if need be), and it took F-O-R-E-V-E-R for DVDFlick to do its thing – but it works.

    I’m open for a more graceful solution.

    If I can be convinced that the paid version of WinX DVD Ripper Platinum will last me for the next ~5 years, then it’ll be money well spent and I’ll go on from there. Somehow I have it in my head that the next greatest DVD coming down the pike will not be decryptable by yesterday’s software — even though my Cyberlink PowerDVD software (from 2002!!) can play all of the original DVDs just fine. Why the 10 year old player works just fine on every DVD and the new decrypters don’t is beyond me, but oh well.

    @TIM:
    I can not say anything about WinX DVD Ripper Platinum’s copy tab issue because I didn’t test it but I can suggest one totally free alternative.
    Use combination of any free dvd decrypting app (google ‘free dvd decrypter’ and you’ll get plenty apps to choose from ) and DVD Shrink (old but still excellent – I use it frequently).

    I notice that the Thanksgiving Edition doesn’t have a “Copy” tab next to the “to AVI” tab. Is mine broken, or is this the way it’s supposed to be?

    As best as I can tell, without this Copy tab, I’m not able to keep my DVDs in an ISO file so that all the menus, chapters, captions, etc, are intact. Is there another way to do this?

    (If I select “to MPEG” and “DVD NTSC”, I get one big VOB file. The VOB file plays on my computer, but I’ve no idea how to create a DVD out of it that my DVD player will like since it’s missing the VIDEO_TS.IFO file)

    Suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Thanks Ashraf.
    Another question -
    All my PC’s are old (2004), and are dying left right and center because some idiot is blowing power supplies, or breaking the CMOS battery socket. (I live alone, so that narrows down the suspects.)
    If I manage to install the program into one of my temporary drives, can I later install it into my main PC, once I get it fixed ?

    Hi Ashraf,
    My only need is making a backup copy of my DVD, to another DVD.
    That is -
    - Single layer DVD to single layer DVD
    or
    - Double layer DVD to single layer DVD

    My scenario is, the program makes a shrunk/decrypted copy onto my hard drive.
    (It creates IFO, VOB, etc files into a chosen folder)
    Then I use Nero to burn a single layer DVD

    Is WinX DVD Ripper Platinum, appropriate for that ?

    Thanks,
    Rob

    @hatman: You don’t have to. This “Thanksgiving Edition” installs into its own folder, so it can co-exist with previous versions/editions side-by-side. You should uninstall other versions/editions, though, to not waste space on your computer.

    @Robert: You are welcome!
