dotTech Advice

Anyone that has followed dotTech for a while knows I am a huge fan of Outpost Firewall: Outpost Firewall has been featured as dotTech’s choice of best free firewall and I personally use Outpost Firewall Pro to protect my computer. Outpost Security Suite (which has a Free and Pro version; Outpost Security Suite Free has replaced the now-depreciated Outpost Firewall Free) is a product that takes Outpost Firewall and builds upon it by adding more features such as anti-virus/anti-malware protection. More specifically, as you can see in the features listed shown above, Outpost Security Suite Pro’s main features are firewall, anti-malware, zero-day threat protection, web surfing protection, and anti-spam protection.

If it isn’t obvious by now, let me put it plainly: In my book Outpost Firewall is one of the best, if not the best, firewalls out there. However, I am not as convinced with the anti-malware features of Outpost Security Suite Pro. It is not that the anti-malware features of Outpost Security Suite Pro are crap; they aren’t: Outpost Security Suite Pro continually gets the Virus Bulletin VB100 award, which shows it is a viable option for anti-malware protection. Rather, I feel there are better anti-malware software out there.

As shown in Virus Bulletin’s RAP tests, Outpost Security Suite Pro (which uses Virus Buster’s signatures) is running with the big boys but falls in the middle of the pack as opposed to being in the top. Of course VB’s RAP tests is only one benchmark; other tests by a different company may paint a slightly different picture. My point is I personally feel more comfortable running Outpost Firewall alongside other anti-malware programs (such as Avast) as opposed to letting Outpost handle all my protection; and the cool thing about Outpost Security Suite Pro is it allows you to do just that. If you don’t want to use all the modules/protection of Outpost Security Suite, you can easily enable/disable the modules/protection you don’t want. For example, with Outpost Firewall Pro I have the anti-spyware and web control modules disabled because I allow Avast to provide that protection for me. This robustness and willingness to play well with others is just one of the reasons why I enjoy Agnitum products.

Overall, to sum up my advice, grab this great freebie while it is available. If, like me, you only want to use Outpost Security Suite Pro for its firewall, you can do that; if you want to use it for all its features you can do that, too.

Freebie Details

1 year licenses of Outpost Security Suite Pro are being given away in a promotion by CHIP. There is no information if this promotion is time limited or not but my guess is it is time limited, so grab this freebie while you can. Also, there is no information on if you can install/reinstall at a later date but the promotion gives you a personalized license code for Outpost Security Suite Pro so my guess is you can install/reinstall whenever you want as long as it is within one year. Do take note, however, the licenses have no shelf-life – they start expiring soon as you get them.

This is a German promotion but the program is in English.

To get a 1 year license of Outpost Security Suite Pro for free, follow these simple directions:

Version being given out for free: v7.5.1

Free updates: Unknown. My guess is anti-malware database signatures and engine updates are free but program updates are not

Free technical support: Unknown

Supported OS: Windows XP/Vista/Win7

Supported e-mail clients for anti-spam protection: Microsoft Office Outlook (2010 and earlier), Windows Mail, Outlook Express, The Bat!

Download size: 190 MB

  • Visit the promotion page and register, using the promotion code provided below:

Promotion code: 76VA6-V3P2S-CC4CW-8S44G-S6F9U

Hit the Abschicken button when you have filled out the whole form.

Note: After you hit the Abschicken button the page may keep loading and time out or you may get a database error. There seems to be some sort of problem with Agnitum’s website. Don’t worry — even if the page keeps loading and times out or you get a database error, you will still be e-mailed your license key. If you get a database error before you are able to submit the form, just be patient until Agnitum fixes their website. I had to try a few times but I got it loaded and was e-mailed a key.

  • Once you submit the form on the promotion page, you will be shown your license key:

Keep this key safe; you will need it to register Outpost Security Suite Pro in order to get the free 1 year license. If you lose it, don’t worry — it is also e-mailed to you.

  • After the download finishes, install Outpost Security Suite Pro. Take note the download includes two installers — one for 32-bit and one for 64-bit. Pick the right one for your computer.
  • After installation you will be asked to restart your computer. You don’t have to, but I suggest you do because Outpost won’t turn on until you restart. If you do decide to restart, be sure to save your key in a Notepad file so you can access it after you restart. If you don’t want to store the key, you can always grab the key from your e-mail (look for an e-mail from sales@agnitum.com with subject of Aktivierung).
  • After you restart your computer (or if you don’t restart your computer), run Outpost Security Suite Pro and register it from the settings menu using the registration key you were provided earlier:

Note: Be sure to enter the registration key’s whole block of text exactly as it appeared on the webpage, including all the line breaks. Best way to do it is copy + paste.

  • Enjoy!

If you have any trouble getting this freebie, please post below and other dotTechies or I will try to help.

    Good news Ashraf. Seems I must have somehow done the same as Merlin. And like him, I got a quick and useful response to my email to the company, with a download link, and am now registered. Greaqt when a company is so responsive. And great when you are too. Many thanks again. ;))

    @Ashraf: MY BAD! I downloaded from Agnitium’s website instead of the promo site. Once I emailed them, they responded and provided me with direct links to both 32 & 64 bit promos. (Must remember this next time)
    Thanks again, Ashraf for all the wonderful freebies.

    @Ashraf:

    Thanks Ashraf. No luck, alas. :(( In addition to the refusal of the code, I’m now, on yet a subsequent attempt, getting a message when I use the promotion code above on this page, that translates on Babylon German to English as “This key is disabled”. I’m wondering if anyone else is getting that now – suggesting it was a very time limited offer – or if it is a computerized response to another attempt from my IP address. All very disappointing, but not your fault at all. I’m very grateful for all you do for us. This was just a bit of bad luck. ;((

    @Ashraf:
    Well spoke too soon. Got 2 keys issued, but neither works and Outpost just disabled the 30 day trial period as a result of incorrect key issue. Something about excess amount of PC’s amount. I just installed the app on a brand new clean install of XP and was using a previous promo on my Win 7 machine for awhile back, but removed it in favour of Online Armour. What’s the answer?

  7. oliviab

    Thanks Ashraf. Appreciate your quick response. I’m puzzled too. It was so smooth yesterday, but today, pouuuuff! Did try for new key today which was when I got the nasty message onscreen re too many computers. And key didn’t work anyhow. All a bit dis-spiriting : your high praise of this software has made me very keen to try it! :) I’ll reboot in a bit and try again w new email and fingers crossed.

    @dadante: You are welcome!

    @teo: I don’t know the exact build but I believe njwood has that covered!

    @njwood60: You are welcome!

    @Roger Ramjet: You are welcome! Thanks for the wishes :-) Same to you!

    @Pete: You are welcome! All the best!

    @VisionMaster: You are welcome — and I wish you a happy ’12 too!

    @alzie: Yes, it can.

    @alzie: Yes, I think you do need to use the specific CHIP download.

    @Spitfire: Have you still been unable to get it? I just tried it and the promotion is still live and I don’t get any “Incorrect Key” error.

    @pkghosh: Yes, that is one of my favorite features of Outpost products — they play well with other software. If you have a conflicting software installed, Outpost will disable the components that conflict automatically. Awesome developer.

    You are welcome!

    @oliviab: Odd. I’m not sure why that happened to you — maybe conflict with another program?

    The offer isn’t expired (I just tried it) and I don’t think they are limiting as to how many registrations you can get per computer or e-mail. I have already gotten somewhere around 3 or 4 registrations using the same e-mail and computer (not because I need to want so many registrations but rather because I have tested to make sure this promo works multiple times after people reported issues).

    I don’t know why you are getting the error you are. It could be the registrations keys are 1 PC only so if you used it once you can use the same key again. May I suggest trying to get another key? And you are welcome. :-)

    Ashraf, after installing this yesterday my computer crashed bigtime and I had to go to an earlier restore point. Tried to get this again just now, just registration won’t take and the publisher gives message that I’m registering on too many computers. Can give them different email for latter prob, but re rego itself, if the offer has not expired I can’t understand why it won’t register today. And wonder if anything I can do? Many thanks again.

    Ashraf,

    After your earlier promotion I have been using Outpost Pro alongwith Avast. Just great. I am an Avast fan for many years now.

    There is an interesting discovery I made when doing a fresh Windows 7 instal in another computer. If you install Outpost Pro first followed by Avast, then you have to disable Real-time Malware Protection of Outpost. But if you install Avast first followed by Outpost Pro, then Real-time Malware Protection is disabled automatically and switches to Compatibility Mode. I do update the Malware database – this allows me to use Outpost Pro as an on demand malware scanner. The same does not seem to work with certain other antivirus programs.

    In your recent review of Avast/Avira/AVG/MSSE it would be interesting to see how Outpost Pro behaves with the other antivirus softwares.

    I follow your reviews as often as I can. Good work and do keep it up. And Thank You…..

    Thanks Ashraf,
    I had the previous offer installed on my notebook and extending the license was a breeze.

    Your efforts and honest reviews are much appreciated.

    Best wishes to you and all my fellow DotTechers for the coming New Year.

    @teo:I have downloaded and installed and the version is 7.5.1 (3791.596.1681) – so no need for you to install. you can just insert the new reg key

    @Ashraf – as always thanks heaps for your reviews and ‘finds’

  13. teo

    Thanks Ashraf,
    registration is OK now.
    What build is this version from CHIP.de, I have installed earlier given free – v. 7.5.1. (3791.596.1681).
    Is it worth to download/install if this is newer build?!..

    @dadante: Depends on what Kaspersky you are running. Do you have Internet Security? Then you don’t need Outpost since KIS has firewall, antivirus/antimalware, etc. If you have KAV then you only have antivirus/antimalware — you can grab Outpost Security Suite Pro and use it for its firewall only (be sure to disable the antivirus/antimalware components that do the same thing as KAV).

    @Merlin: Works fine for me. Make sure you are entering it properly.

    @Hans: Yeah, you never want two programs that do the same thing.

    @oliviab: You are welcome!

  15. oliviab

    Thanks Ashraf. REally appreicate your thoughtful explorations of the products, and love it when you give a wholehearted endorsement, such as on today’s offer. The foreign language help visuals were more useful than usual too, tho it may of course just have been that I’d had enough coffee. ;))

  16. Hans

    @ dadante :
    never think have more than one security program on your computer. It’ will slow down your computer.
    I had ever a bad experience because installed two different internet security in one computer.

    For those of you that have a 1 year license of Outpost Security Suite Pro from earlier this year via dotTech’s own promo (http://dottech.org/freebies/23269/dottech-promo-free-1-year-licenses-of-outpost-security-suite-pro-72-hours-only/), you should be able to use the license from this new promo to renew it for another year. (It will replace the current months you have left — it won’t give you leftover months + 1 year).
