dotTech Advice
3D modeling is something I know absolutely nothing about. As such, I cannot really give advice one way or another on DAZ Studio 4 Pro, Hexagon 2.5 or Bryce 7 Pro. Instead, I ask dotTechies who do have experience with 3D modeling give us feedback regarding these software in the comments below.
Do take note, however, back in December dotTech posted about a DAZ Studio 4 freebie. Today’s freebie includes DAZ Studio 4 Pro — a more feature filled version of the software.
Freebie Details
DAZ Studio 4 Pro, Hexagon 2.5, and Bryce 7 Pro are being given away in a promotion by the developer. The giveaway is live until February 29, 2011 but there is no information on if you can install/reinstall at a later date. My guess is you can install/reinstall at a later date because the freebie is being processed like you are purchasing it (although you don’t have to enter any financial details).
To get DAZ Studio 4 Pro, Hexagon 2.5, and Bryce 7 Pro for free, do the following:

Note: Bryce 7 doesn’t work well on Mac OS X Lion
Download size: Varies depending on what you download, but they are large files — hundreds of MB
- The first thing you need to do is register an account with DAZ Productions. (If you already have an account with them, skip to the next step — you don’t need to create a new one.) Registration is free and only takes a few minutes. To register, visit the registration page and fill out the form:
Take note if you aren’t comfortable giving your birthday you don’t have to — leave it at the default value and you will still register just fine.
Once you will out the form hit the create account button. If you do it properly you will see a page like that says the following:
Check the inbox of the e-mail address you registered with. Look for an e-mail from noreply@daz3d.com with subject of DAZ account confirmation. In the e-mail is a link u must follow:
Click on the link or copy + paste it in your browser. Close the page that loads — you now have an active account with DAZ Productions.
- Visit the promotion page for each of the three software (DAZ Studio 4 Pro | Hexagon 2.5 | Bryce 7 Pro) and click add to cart on each page:
- When you click add to cart a window will pop up on each page. Close this window on the first two promotion pages. On the third page, when you have all three products in your cart, click the checkout button:
- Now log into your account:
- At the next page click on the Place Order button:
If all goes well you will be shown a confirmation message:
- Visit the serial keys section of your profile for the serial keys:
- Visit the downloads section of your profile for the download links:
Take note while there are many downloads, most of them are just add-ons and extra stuff. The download names Hexagon 2, Bryce 7 Pro, and DAZ Studio 4 64-bit/DAZ Studio 4 32-bit are the main program downloads.
- Download, install, and register (with the serial keys you were given) whichever products you want to use.

I created my first animated digital scene in the demo version of Bryce back in probably 2000 (I would have been 13). It was always on my wish list, but I never got around to buying it. This is very good news for me…very good news. Thank you daz3d and dottech!

Once you have the programs they become normal retail versions so are eligible for free updates and upgrade pricing. I read this in one of their notifications.
There are also lots of other freebies on the website. Click on the link below and then up on the left there is a link to Free Products. You can save hundreds of dollars by getting them.

As far as I know, you can. Since their download links only stay open for a few days and Google Chrome corrupted every single one of them, I had to put in another request using the same email address, and it worked fine.
Did anyone else get gibberish for the license agreement?

I have a friend who has mentioned is desire for software for modelling (drawing / designing / brainstorming) the interior of the house (placement of furniture etc) and perhaps the landscape of the block of land that the house is on (tree, shrub placement, etc).
Would any of these applications be ideal for this ?
Anyone that has installed these, did they notice if any of them, install masses of files and dependencies ?
If my memory is functioning, I think I once put a trial of Adobe Acrobat into a PC, and it placed masses of files/dependencies into that PC. I immediately restored the drive back to an earlier image.

Is anyone prepared to try an experiment on our behalf.
Could they download and get the serial keys, and then disconnect from the web, when installing them.
If they install successfully, that probably means that some of us could download the programs, get our serial keys, and install them at some future time (instead of now)
Once the purchase order goes through the programs are added to the Available Download List, for a limited time, and added to Order History. The available serial codes are given and in the Order History each item has a reset button to Request Download once they have been removed from the Available Download List. In the forums they suggest doing the purchase order now even if not going to be used at present so they will be available at anytime. I’ve saved mine away on my computer as do not intend to install now. In my Order History is every item I’ve downloaded since 2009 and each one has a Download Reset Button and all reg codes are there for every free program I have ordered from them.
On their support page under Product Registration they state:
No registration is currently required for current versions of all DAZ 3D software. If your purchase was made through DAZ3D.COM we have record of your purchase. If you purchased your software through a third party, we strongly recommend that you keep a proof of purchase to ensure availability to product upgrades in the future.

Anyone having download problems ?
I set the ‘PC only’ (not mac), and thought the simplest way to avoid confusing me, was to work my way down the list in sequence.
I was partly into the download for Bryce 7 content, and whilst I was napping, it failed.
I told ‘FF download page’ to retry, and it did BUT STARTING FROM THE BEGINNING OF THAT FILE.
My download limit for the month may be reached if that happens to me a few times.
I am experiencing problems with registration. I have requested a resend 7 times of the account confirmation email (via the forgotten password link) and still have not received the account confirmation email.
Anyone else having this problem?
@Mike: I am having the same problem. I signed up for a Daz 3D account and never received a confirmation link email. I then tried to create a completely new Daz 3D account using a different email address. Same thing. I never received an email confirmation from Daz 3D. I then visited their site to let them know there is a problem with registration. Unfortunately, the “Contact us if you are having problems with registration.” link at the bottom of the page returns a 404 error. When I tried to contact them using the “Contact Us” link on their support page it says “You must have a user account in order to contact the support department.” Um, hate to say it Daz 3D, but that is the whole problem here–I can’t create a new user account, so how the heck am I supposed to log into one in order to tell you that I can’t create one? Too bad, this looks like some pretty interesting software.
@cliffhanger_mt: I tried the new account with a different email address as well. With the same results. Seems like Daz 3D really doesn’t want to give thier software away.
UPDATE: I just went through the entire procedure again using ONLY Internet Explorer for everything related to registration and downloading. It worked! Apparently,Daz 3D does not play nice with Chrome, Safari, or Firefox (at least on my systems).
I have been trying to get rid of DAZ ever since I made the mistake of installing it because it made my very stable Windows 7 64bit crash. I eventually cleaned it out of my system and now all is well but I can not stop the incessant emails no matter how many times I have clicked on Unsubscribe. This is NOT a friendly application at all! I just want to be left in peace, it seems that there is useless to block spam when even legit software is at it.

Possibly they are being overrun with requests for free copies, by vultures.

PS I have a rich mate who lives in one of our best suburbs.
Every Australian Council, a couple of days a year, have a ‘Hard rubbish day’ where the residents can leave sinks, car wheels, electronics, etc, out on the footpath.
His suburb’s residents put out some pretty good functioning electronics (a better class of rubbish).
I have asked him to let me know early, when his suburb is having a ‘Hard rubbish day’, so that I can get there before the vultures.

Hi Rob,
I am experienced with 3D virtual modelling and I can tell you that Daz is a very good program.
That being said, It has a very steep learning curve. The free program components offered today are the basic components. The programs are very powerful but to be of real use you need to import plugins, enviornments, scenes, and different templates. Those of course are quite expensive.
To put it in perspective, it would be like MS Paint.
If you are looking for a better modeling program that is much eaiser to learn and use to get into 3D, I would suggest Google ScetchUp. It has many many free components and is not as crippled as DAZ is.
You can design your first model in a matter of minutes by watching the video tutorials.

I had no problems downloading the programs, and received instant emails, as I always have, but for this promotion I got in early in the 1st week of January. They certainly do want to give the programs away. That’s the whole point of the exercise. If there are not enough people owning the new versions then there won’t be enough call for all the new products. That’s the point of all this. To get people to be interested in 3D and then continue on buying product. But there is plenty of free files available and more are added every week. Of course if one decided to go into it seriously you will need to spend some money eventually.
I read in the forums yesterday the site was grinding to a halt with all the extra activity, which should be understandable. I see this page alone has had over 2,600 views.

Rob sounds like you’re with the wrong provider. On my ADSL plan I get 12 hours of downloads free each day, and the hours are good, 4am to 4pm and then for the other 12 hours they come off my very generous plan. I try to make sure all major downloads are done during the free time.

i would agree to Rob when we talk about bloatware. i am VERY careful right now to “install” any software (portable apps are more than welcome) specially for which i have little info. downloading the EXE file and saving the license is a good thing as you can take the decision later when you get to know more about it. unfortunately, most freebies don’t work that way.
