Android has over 450,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our Android Apps of the Day [1] initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! Apps for March 21, 2012

Handy Scanner

[6]Handy Scanner is a document scanner for Android. Basically what Handy Scanner does is it takes your photos (of documents), optimizes them, and then saves them as PDF files. Using Handy Scanner, you snap photos of documents you want to “scan”; Handy Scanner detects the document present in the photo, with you having the ability to correct it if it messes up; optimize the photo with settings such as contrast and gray-scale; then save as PDF and export it to wherever you want, including e-mail, picture messages/MMS, etc. You also have the ability to export individual pages of saved documents (as opposed to the whole document) as JPG or PDF.

Handy Scanner comes in an ad-supported Free version and an ad-free Pro version ($3.99). The Free version has some limitations:You can store up to twenty documents before you have to delete them off Handy Scanner; each document can have up to five pages; you can take up to three camera shots in a row; scan quality is limited to low or medium; contrast and brightness fine-tuning is not available in free version; and free version has a text watermark at bottom of PDF pages.

Price: Free, $3.99 [7]

The main features of Siine are: “Shortcuts” which are customizable icons that insert a quick message; a built-in clock and calendar which make it easy to insert a specific date and time in a message; “Stress Message” which are similar to shortcuts except are specifically intended for those moments when are busy but would like to send someone a quick message telling them you can’t reply right now; “Slang Sets” which allow you to insert slang terms; personalized emoticons, which are emoticons you create yourself; and “Sexy Delete” which allows you to delete a message by long tapping the backspace button then waving your finger until the text is deleted.

With Notifier you enter whatever you want to be reminded about (a title and optional description) plus the date and time you want to be reminded. When the date and time arrives, Notifier displays a notification in your notification bar/pull-down menu about the task/event/whatever; you also have the option to have Notifier show a popup window and/or turn the device screen on when receiving a notification. If you shell out for Notifier+ ($1.00) you get support for pin notifications on Android 3.0 and higher and the ability to sync notifications across multiple devices using Dropbox.

dotTechies: We have tested all the apps listed above. However, Android Apps of the Day articles are not intended as “reviews” but rather as “heads-up” to help you discover new apps. Always use your best judgement when downloading apps, such as trying trial/free versions before purchasing paid apps, if applicable.
