iOS apps of the day [April 6, 2012]

iOS has over 600,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our iOS Apps of the Day initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! [Subscribe to our iOS section to never miss an article: RSS Feed | E-mail]

Mahjong Triplet

Mahjong Triplet is a Chinese tile game that is similar to other mahjong games with one exception. Instead of matching two tiles you are matching three at one time. Every time you select a tile it goes into the holding bar waiting for the other two tiles to be set next to it which will take all three off the board. The game uses traditional Chinese tile images to make it look authentic. The more you finish a board will allow you to unlock more boards in the game. You can change the tile’s art, the tile’s background and even the background picture, and you get a quick tutorial on how to play the game.

MyCityWay – USA

MyCityWay – USA is an app that helps you find lots of different places and happenings in the city you choose.  There are currently 39 cities included in the app with more to come. When you have location services turned on, the app will select the closest cities it has in its database. Once you select a city it will download everything that pertains to that city so you can search for places to eat, parking, Wi-Fi locations, and even news and weather in the area. There are a lot of things you can search, and you can change cities when you go traveling elsewhere. The app will first ask if you are a resident or a visitor, and even being a resident it would help finding things in your area that you might not have known existed.

There is a little ad bar at the bottom, but these ads are just places that the app recommends like where to eat or something else all together.  After you select the city you want the app will download everything all at once, and it states that this download is a one time thing. Navigating your way in the city you live in or a city you aren’t familiar with will make things better using this.

Planets

Planets is an astronomers dream app of the stars and even the planets in the sky. If you view this in 2D you get a flat screen with the stars you want to see like the Orion star system, and you can view a lot more looking at the 3D screen which gives you a planetarium looking style of the night sky. You can find out when a planet will become visible, and it also has a spinning globe of the planets and the moon. This should be invigorating for anyone interested in astronomy. (Also the developer’s name really made the Star Trek fan in me laugh out loud!)
