About iOS Apps of the Day

iOS has over 600,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our iOS Apps of the Day [6] initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! Apps for April 12, 2012

ZIPcodes

[9]ZIPcodes is an app that helps you figure out what zip code belongs to a particular city or you can find out what zip codes belong to a specific city. You have the option to search for a city or zip code rather than browse the list of cities or zip codes. This app has zip codes in 18 countries which are Austria, Australia, Belgium, China, France, Germany, Italy, Kuwait, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Serbia / Montenegro, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Once you find the city or zip code you are looking for, you can see how it looks on the map by taking you out of this app to your default map app.

This app also includes Canada in the zip codes list, but once you select it the app crashes. It seems strange since the app’s page says nothing about it so there is no reason why Canada is included unless it will become available some time in the future. Since this app hasn’t been updated since July 29, 2008, it might be unlikely for any new updates. Even with that bug, this app is pretty good getting the general idea of figuring out the zip code you might need. If you do need a precise zip code search by looking up the address, city, state/province, then you should go to the postal web site to find the proper zip code for your letter or package like USPS.com or CanadaPost.com.

iPharmacy

[12]iPharmacy is an app that educates you on different types of medications you are taking as well as to verify the medication you received from the pharmacy look exactly what they should look like if you need to know you got the right medication. Other things in the app include a free discount card that you can pull up and show to the pharmacists to get your medication cheaper than full price if you don’t have a health care plan or that the health care provider won’t cover the medication.

Also you can identify the pill by what shape it is, what color it is, and if it has a score mark on it or not. You can keep track of the medication you are taking by keying that in to the app in case you need to refer to it later like letting another doctor know what kind of medication you are taking. There is a medical forum which appears to be helpful just by looking at the individual posts rather than see the senseless chatter on the latest posts. You can find the closest pharmacies to your current location in case you need to stop on by one, or you can see what weekly deals there are online (but it is unknown if these will help or not).

The Free version only comes with the Pill Identifier module and you can remove the ads for $0.99. It seems that nothing else is added according to the app’s page. The Pill Identifier and Medical Guide is $0.99 that doesn’t come with ads so if you are willing to spend the money buying this app after trying the free version might be a better thing if you think this is right for you. If you want to buy the Professional version that will cost you $1.99 which only adds a medication reminder just in case you forget to refill your maintenance prescription. One note about the free discount card, it is very unclear if this works since you aren’t paying for the card so it might save you some money, but saving up to 75% sounds a bit unrealistic.

Price: Free (Ad supported); with Medication Guide: $0.99; Pro: $1.99 [13]

Version discovered: 5.0

Requires: iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad; iOS 4.0 and up

Download size: 9.9 MB; with MG & Pro: 9.8 MB

Driver™

[17]Driver is a driving game that is similar to the Grand Theft Auto series that you have missions to complete to progress in the game. This is based on the classic game that came out in 1999 and 2000 on select systems. The game’s story mode comes with 40 missions in 4 different cities (Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York), and other modes like training, free play mode, and driving games. There are realistic scenes in everywhere you drive around each city including working street lights, pedestrians, moving traffic, and vigilante policeman on patrol. This also has a soundtrack with three radio stations playing tracks inspired by 70s music. If only the game would include an option that you can play your iPod music, then this game would be magnificent!

Price: $2.99 [18]

Version discovered: 1.1.1

Requires: iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad; iOS 2.2.1 and up

dotTechies: We have tested all the apps listed above. However, iOS Apps of the Day articles are not intended as “reviews” but rather as “heads-up” to help you discover new apps. Always use your best judgement when downloading apps, such as trying trial/free versions before purchasing paid apps, if applicable.
