About Android Apps of the Day

Android has over 450,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our Android Apps of the Day [6] initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! Apps for April 18, 2012

Pocket

[9]Not to be confused with the other Pocket app, Pocket is an app that allows users to download online content for offline viewing. Formerly known as Read It Later Pro (which used to be paid but has now been renamed to Pocket and made free), Pocket allows users to download almost any type of online content (articles, web pages, videos, images, etc.) onto Android devices. Once content is downloaded to Pocket, you can view the content while you have no active Internet connection. If you are wondering why anyone would want to use Pocket to download content only to view it later, think about the many times you are in a place where you have no active Internet connection, such as on an airplane. The best part is Pocket syncs all downloaded content across phones, tablets, and computers so downloading from either of your devices ensures you have it on all devices (assuming you had an active Internet connection on your other devices at the time of download).

As already mentioned, Pocket used to be known as Read It Later Pro and used to be a paid app. Now, however, it is free.

Word Search

[11]Word Search is a simple word search puzzle game for Android. You are given a grid of letters from which you must find words. At the bottom of the grid is a list of all the words you must find. When you find a word you must highlight it by tapping + dragging your finger over all the letters. Once you finish one puzzle, you can hit the refresh button to get another puzzle. Word Search supports 11 languages (American English, British English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Nederlands (?), Polish, Portuguese, and Brazilian Portuguese) so you don’t necessarily need to be an English speaker to play it.

Hooked

[13]Hooked is a search engine for Android games that provides personalized game recommendations based on the games you like. When you first install Hooked it scans your device for games you have installed; then it asks you to rate those games. After you rate the games, Hooked shows you a list of “What’s Hot” games which includes games selected by critics, games your friends are playing (if you decided to connect with Facebook/Google+ accounts), most liked games, and most played games; and a list of “Recommended” games personalized for you.

As you use Hooked to download Android games, Hooked refines the “Recommended” list based on the new games you download. All games are linked directly to Play Store so you don’t actually download from Hooked itself. Browsing Hooked for games can be done by searching for specific games, searching by category, by price, by maturity or by rating; or by using the previously mentioned “Recommended” and “What’s Hot” lists. When browsing games on Hooked you can “Install” them (i.e. be taken to their Play Store pages), rate them, “Save for later”, or tell Hooked you aren’t interested in the game by saying “No thanks”.

dotTechies: We have tested all the apps listed above. However, Android Apps of the Day articles are not intended as “reviews” but rather as “heads-up” to help you discover new apps. Always use your best judgement when downloading apps, such as trying trial/free versions before purchasing paid apps, if applicable.
