Android apps of the day [April 24, 2012]
Posted By Ashraf On April 24, 2012 @ 12:01 AM In Android Apps of the Day | No Comments
Android has over 450,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our Android Apps of the Day initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! Android apps come with different types of ‘addons’ that allow the apps to perform specific functions. There are addons for showing advertisements (traditional in-app ads and push notification ads), gathering analytics, licensing addons, social gaming addons, and more. Addons Detector is an app that detects all these addons and lets you know which apps use which addons after which you can uninstall any offending apps you desire. For the most part I’m sure most of us don’t care about stuff like licensing or social gaming addons. However, Addons Detector is extremely useful for trying to determine which apps are showing those extremely annoying push notification ads (e.g AirPush ads) — the ads that appear in your notification bar/pull-down menu. Once you know which apps are showing those annoying ads, you can uninstall them.
Other features of Addons Detector include listing apps by install date, listing apps by what system access permissions they are using, and a ‘Notification Monitor’ which monitors all the notifications that appear in your notification bar and lets you know exactly which apps put the notifications there.
Addons Detector is free; and there is a ‘donate’ version that adds a ‘Live Monitor’ feature that scans apps as they are installed and lets you know if anything is found in them. You can donate $0.99, $1.99, or $2.99 — it is your choice and it is does via in-app purchase.
Price: Free, $0.99-$2.99
Version discovered: v2.1
Requires: Android 1.6 and up

There are many ways to schedule events (parties, meetups, get-togethers, etc.) with the most popular method undoubtedly being Facebook. If you have yet to find the perfect events scheduler, GiddyUp may be worth a try. GiddyUp is an app that allows users to create events and invite friends to them. To create an event all you need is event name and a list of people you want to invite to the event; you can optionally add an image for the event, schedule a date and time for the event, pick a location for the event, and add any notes to the event. When you create an event, you can invite anyone from your contacts list to the event. If the person(s) you invite have the GiddyUp app, they will be notified by the GiddyUp app of the event you invited them to after which they have the option to accept, reject, or pick maybe. If they person(s) don’t have GiddyUp, they are sent an SMS (free of cost to you, your friend may be charged for incoming SMS if that is how their cell phone plan works) about the event with a link to a web page from where they can accept, reject, or pick maybe.
Once events are created they can be shared on Facebook and Twitter and saved to your calendar. There is even a nifty chat feature which allows you to chat among on the invitees that have GiddyUp. If you prefer ‘closed’ events, you can set an event as ‘private’ in which case only the people you invite can view and attend the event. If you set an event as ‘public’ anyone you invite can invite other people and share the event on Facebook/Twitter.
Take note to use GiddyUp you must register an account with them that requires you to enter your phone number and e-mail address (registration is free). Currently GiddyUp only accepts 10 digit phone numbers so if you have a phone number with more digits you can still use GiddyUp but you will have to enter a fake phone number. Also, GiddyUp does not specify which countries it supports sending SMSes to — it may or may not be USA only.
Version discovered: v1.2
Requires: Android 2.1 and up
Download size: 2.2 MB
Random Pictures is an app that shows users random pictures from the Internet. The pictures are random in nature meaning you have absolute no control over which images appear; and the pictures are unfiltered so you can be shown any type of pictures — including adult ones.
You can view images one-by-one or use Random Pictures in ‘endless mode’ which automatically shows images one after another, like a slideshow. Images you see can be saved and if you opt to go with the paid version of Random Pictures, you can go one step back and view the previous image — free version doesn’t let you go back to previous image.
Price: Free, $1.49
Version discovered: v1.17
Requires: Android 1.6 and up
Download size: 280 KB
dotTechies: We have tested all the apps listed above. However, Android Apps of the Day articles are not intended as “reviews” but rather as “heads-up” to help you discover new apps. Always use your best judgement when downloading apps, such as trying trial/free versions before purchasing paid apps, if applicable.
