About Android Apps of the Day

Android has over 450,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our Android Apps of the Day [6] initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! Apps for May 8, 2012

Icy Time

[9]Icy Time is a stopwatch and timer app. What makes this app different than other stopwatch and timer apps are two things. Firstly, it is minimalistic in nature — aside from the ability to change the interface color theme from ‘dark’ to ‘bright’ and to change the timer ringtone, there are no options or features to this app other than its core stopwatch and timer functions. This minimalist nature makes Icy Time easy to use and also ensures it is one of the few apps that does not require any system access permissions. Secondly, Icy Time follows the Holo theme guidelines [10] set out by Google for Android apps so it has that futuristic feeling that is associated with Holo. (Icy Time works on Android 2.2 and up devices — just because it uses Holo doesn’t mean it only runs on Android 4.x+ devices only.)

Tasks

[13]Tasks is a todo list app. However, it isn’t just another todo list app. What makes Tasks different than most other todo list apps is that Tasks is, more or less, a client for Google Tasks. In other words, Tasks fully syncs with Google Tasks; you can’t even use Tasks unless you use Google Tasks. Indeed the first thing you need to do when you run Tasks is select which of your Google accounts you want to sync with. Once you have selected an account, you can manage the tasks just like if you were using Google Tasks in your browser on your computer: you can add, delete, and edit tasks; each task can have a title, date, and description; lists can be created (e.g. ‘Work’ list) which contain multiple tasks; and more.

Since Tasks syncs with Google Tasks, any changes you make within Tasks is automatically reflected in your Google Tasks account (assuming you have an Internet connection to perform the sync) which you can access on your computer.

If you are a widget user, Tasks comes with a 2×2 widget you can use. Other highlights of Tasks is its integration of Google’s Holo theme guidelines [10], due date reminders, and the ability to sync with multiple Google accounts (you need not only use one).

Tasks Free is free, fully functional, and ad-supported. Tasks is paid, fully functional, and ad-free.

Stumpd

[16]Are you a Cricket fan and dream of being the next Dennis Lilly? Then Stumpd may be for you. Stumpd is a Cricket game for Android in which the goal is to hit the stumps with the ball as many times as possible (there is no batter). The game play is similar to the ‘paper toss’ genre of games in the sense that there is a wind factor which affects where the ball will go after you bowl it; plus there are four game modes (‘Galli’, ‘Net Practice’, ‘Ranji Trophy’, and ‘World Cup’) for you to tussle with. Once you get a score you are proud of, you can post it to your Facebook Wall (if you have one).

dotTechies: We have tested all the apps listed above. However, Android Apps of the Day articles are not intended as “reviews” but rather as “heads-up” to help you discover new apps. Always use your best judgement when downloading apps, such as trying trial/free versions before purchasing paid apps, if applicable.
