dotTech Advice

If you’ve been on dotTech for a long time, you’ll definitely recognize uRex DVD Ripper. However, you probably won’t recognize the company name, and for good reason. They appear to be a reseller or subsidiary of some other software developer, as Ashraf mentions in an older giveaway of uRex Video Converter Platinum:

It is hard to get a finger on uRex Video Converter Platinum. It is obvious they are a reseller and/or somehow related to a larger software developer (based off past experience and the fact their domain was registered in 2011, I take their claim of being around since Feburary 2005 with a grain of salt). What isn’t obvious is exactly which developer they are associated with. Their program name and website makes me think Digiarty Software; but the program interface and features makes me think Wondershare Software. I’m leaning more towards Wondershare. Anyway, it isn’t too terribly important who uRex is reselling. What is important is if it’s quality or not.

As you can see from the screenshot to the right, uRex looks almost exactly the same as Wondershare’s DVD Ripper Premium. And this is a good thing: Wondershare makes fairly high quality software, and it’s a nice tool to get for free.

    Today GOTD, was giving away a copy.
    I installed it, and activated it, easily.
    I went to the ‘Cog wheel’ Settings and noticed that the checkbox for weekly updates checking, is checked.
    Any of you that have a copy (from this web page, or earlier giveaways), do you have that checked ?
    Have any of you allowed the update ?
    Has it made it unusable (no longer registered) ?

    Re Ashraf’s ponderings: I’ve today installed both this and the Digiarty offer on giveawayoftheday.

    I can’t tell the difference between ‘em: just look at their GUIs (not as in the comparison screenshot on this page, by the way.)

    Wondershare???? Doesn’t look like it to me — and the fact that both the Digiarty app and this from, er, the non-existent ‘uRex’ are being given away simultaneously is surely more than a coincidence . . .

    The setup.exe wants to install this presumably 32-bit software in 64-bit Win7′s folder for 64-bit programs. Not sure what if any problems that may cause, but it indicates something is wrong in development process unless of course this turns out to be 64-bit software and they didn’t tell us. Another possibility that occurs to me is that this is old software written before 64-bit operating systems were so common, but as I recall there was even a 64-bit version of WinXP, not to mention a little something called Vista. I also wonder if this is some cast-off software that the developer decided not to have their name associated with for various reasons?

    First you rip, then you edit. Different software requirements.

    What’s more important? A good result or a fast result? Personallly I never completely believe any application that claims to do everything at once.

    @jayesstee
    “‘Rippers’ don’t do much editing. They specialize in ‘Ripping’ – the clue is in the name!”
    IMHO, great rippers actually tweak (read “edit”) a lot specially DVDs by using lot of filters to optimize (say, sharpening, luma correction) the look (and, sound, too, particularly, denoising). i have seen horrible DVDs looking great after those manipulations.
    but yes, they don’t do editing frame by frame, of course. ^_^

    @yoav:
    ‘Rippers’ don’t do much editing. They specialize in ‘Ripping’ – the clue is in the name!

    However if you read the very small print above after
    “The following is the list of DVDs/input formats and output formats supported by uRex DVD Ripper Platinum, as per the developer:”
    it says:
    “Easy and rich Video Editing Features
    Merge titles, crop to get rid of the unwanted black line, Movie Preview, Free crop adjusting and variety of effect
    functions such as Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Blur etc. etc. and etc”

    That’s about all the editing you are going to get!

    If you need a proper video editor, try:

    where they review several.

    uRex DVD Ripper Platinum can do:
    “Edit videos by trimming, cropping, adjusting brightness, contrast and other effects etc.”
    I didn`t find “Edit” function.
    I wrote to their support: “support@urexsoft.com” Aabout it, and received by Email these error message:
    ‘support@urexsoft.com’ at- 20/05/2012 16:58
    451 4.3.0 Error: queue file write error
    So, I can`t contact them.

    Maybe someone know if there is Edit function, because i want to Edit video which in my compute.
    thanks
