Android apps of the day [May 30, 2012]

Android has over 450,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our Android Apps of the Day initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! There are many video player apps out there, such as dotTech’s recommended MoboPlayer and new comer Wondershare Player . Super Video, Floating & Popup is also a video player app; however it is a unique video player different than the rest. What makes Super Video different than the rest is how it displays videos. Instead of showing videos in a dedicated full screen window like how other video players work, Super Video shows videos in a popup window that floats above other apps. That popup window can be resized as desired (even maximized to full screen) and has the regular video player functions built in such as stop, play, etc. You have to see it to fully understand how it works.
The drawback to Super Video, however, is it doesn’t add software decoding capabilities; Super Video depends on hardware decoding capabilities of your Android device to play videos. In other words, whereas other video players like MoboPlayer and Wondershare Player can play virtually any video format, Super Video can only play those video formats that are natively supported by your Android device (i.e. videos that can be played without downloading a third-party video player). So if you have a low-end device, or a vanilla Android device, Super Video may not be able to play all video formats — it all depends on what your device manufacturer built into the device.
Super Video comes in free and paid versions. The free version does all that is described above. The paid version adds more features such as multi-window (i.e. play multiple videos at a time) and favorite files support. (Paid version is available via in-app purchase.)

Remember Jet Launcher and SwipePad , the two app launchers that work via swipe gestures, and Smart Launcher , the app launcher that learns your favorite apps and automatically sorts them into a folder? ReLaunch is what can be considered to be a combination of the just-mentioned three apps. ReLaunch is an app launcher that automatically sorts apps into nine categories, “learns” your favorite apps and sorts them accordingly for quicker access, and is accessed via swipe gestures meaning it can be accessed while running any other app.
The nine categories ReLaunch uses are ‘Talk’, ‘Play’, ‘Work’, ‘Seek’, ‘Relax’, ‘Setup’, ‘Live’, ‘Read’, and ‘Lost’. ReLaunch uses Google Play Store to sort apps according into the proper category (you need an active Internet connection when you first use ReLaunch so it can query Play Store). If you have some apps that aren’t on Play Store, they are put in the ‘Lost’ category. If you don’t like or don’t agree with how ReLaunch has categorized an app, ReLaunch provides users with the ability to manually move apps from category to category.
The hotspots to launch ReLaunch via swipe gestures are on the left and right of your Android device. By default both the left and right hotspots are active but you have the ability to manually disable either one.
Take note ReLaunch is not a homescreen replacement app. It is a swipe gesture app launcher that works in harmony with any homescreen app, including whatever came with your Android device and third-party homescreen apps like GO Launcher EX or Launcher Pro.
ReLaunch comes in free and paid versions. As far as I can tell the only difference between the two is the free version has “popups” in the launcher. What exactly these popups are I’m not sure (I haven’t seen one yet) but I assume they are ads. The paid version removes these popups.

MatchUp Buddy is a card matching memory game for Android. There aren’t very many options or settings to this game; you just launch it, select the card set you want to use, select number of cards, and play. There are six card sets and each set has eight selections for number of cards (you can play with as little as four cards or as many as hundred cards). The goal of each round is to find matching cards in the least amount of tries. Each matching pair nets you 100 points whereas each wrong selection is a minus one. At the end of the round you are given bonus points depending on the time it took to finish the round and how many tries you took. The bonus points are added to your score which then creates a total. There isn’t any social aspect to this game so you can’t share or show off your points.

dotTechies: We have tested all the apps listed above. However, Android Apps of the Day articles are not intended as “reviews” but rather as “heads-up” to help you discover new apps. Always use your best judgement when downloading apps, such as trying trial/free versions before purchasing paid apps, if applicable.
