About Android Apps of the Day

Android has over 450,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our Android Apps of the Day initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! Apps for June 7, 2012

iMindMap

iMindMap, which is available in a tablet specific iMindMap HD version, is an app that lets you create mind maps on your Android device. Features include the ability to create mind maps using branches, boxes, freehand, arrows, pictures, text, ideas, links, etc.; undo and redo features; ability to customize background color; and more. Mind maps can be exported as PNG images or IMX format files. If you don’t want to create your own mind map you have the ability to use templates that come with the app (but take note they are automatically downloaded separately by the app the first time you try to use a template). By design iMindMap stores all your mind maps in the cloud (you need to create a free account to use iMindMap, for this very reason) and syncs it across other devices you may use iMindMap on.

Take note iMindMap is a free app. However, some of the features of iMindMap, such as the ability to insert your own custom images, sync across multiple devices, and ability to export as PNG images, are only available if you subscribe to iMindMap Premium which is a reoccurring subscription you must subscribe to. A 30 day subscription to iMindMap Premium costs $2.40 while a 12 month subscription to iMindMap Premium costs $16.08.

FolderSync

FolderSync is an app that allows users to sync files and folders from their Android devices to the cloud. What makes FolderSync different than other sync apps is FolderSync supports a ginormous amount of cloud services; FolderSync allows users to sync files to SkyDrive, Dropbox, SugarSync, Ubuntu One, Box.net, LiveDrive, HiDrive, Google Docs [Google Drive], NetDocuments, and Amazon S3 in addition to supporting FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, Samba/CIFS connections.

Other features of FolderSync include support for multiple accounts (i.e. multiple syncs), a built-in file manager, multiple sync types, and more.

FolderSync comes in two versions, FolderSync Lite (the free version) and FolderSync (the paid version). FolderSync Lite is ad-supported and feature-limited whereas FolderSync is ad-free and has all features.

Note: A comment on FolderSync’s Play Store page claims FolderSync has problems syncing large files with Dropbox. I cannot confirm or deny this claim but just be aware if you are having issues.

Requires: Android 2.1 and up

Audio Control

Audio Control is an app that allows users to create ‘audio profiles’ and easily switch between these profiles as needed. For each profile you create you are allowed to set customized audio levels for ‘System Volume’, ‘Ringer/Notification Volume’, ‘Media Volume’, ‘Alarm Volume’, ‘In-call Volume’, and ‘Speakerphone Volume’; plus you can select when to vibrate and set ringer mode. You have the option to manually switch between profiles using Audio Control’s main app interface or use widgets which are available in a variety of sizes. If you want to have audio profiles change automatically, there is a schedule feature which allows you to do just that; and there is an option to set a specific profile to automatically engage when a headset (Bluetooth or wired) is used.

Audio Control is available in two versions, Audio Control Lite (the free version) and Audio Control (the paid version). Audio Control Lite is ad-supported and feature-limited while Audio Control is ad-free and has all available features.

Price: Free, $1.99

Version discovered: v1.5.7
