About Windows Software of the Day

Windows has hundreds of thousands of programs. Because of this great volume and lack of a central store, software discovery (aka finding new and useful programs) is extremely difficult. With our Windows Software of the Day initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three programs, allowing our readers to discover new software, daily. Enjoy! [Subscribe to our Windows section to never miss an article: RSS Feed | E-mail]

Remove Empty Directories

Somewhere on your hard drive, right now, there lives an evil so great it can not be named. This evil is an empty folder: villianously sitting there like nothing is wrong.

Ok, maybe empty folders aren’t that terrible. But if you are left with a huge pile of them, it can get really annoying to deal with, and you probably just ignore them. Remove Empty Directories will save you, as it will automatically scan and destroy every empty folder it can find. It killed 701 directories when I tried it.

Remove Empty Directories is super easy to set up. You just give it a base folder–for instance, C: or Downloads–and it scans away. When it’s done scanning, it’ll tell you how many folders it’s going to remove, and where they are. It’s quite easy to remove these annoying folders in just minutes with Remove Empty Directories.

Jumplist Extender

Many programs make use of Windows 7’s cool jumplist feature, but at the same time many do not. Unfortunately, Microsoft didn’t let anyone customize the jumplists theirselves, and you’re left with a useless little menu that has nothing of use.

With Jumplist Extender, you can get around that. If a program lets you do something with a keyboard shortcut, Jumplist Extender will let you do that action from the jumplist menu, even if it requires multiple shortcuts in a row. This can be useful for adding new tab and close window shortcuts to your browser, for example, or copying everything from a text file.

With Jumplist Extender, the possibilities are limitless. What will you do with it?
