Free eXPert PDF 5 Pro!

Some time ago I posted about how you can get eXPert PDF 4 Pro for free. Then I posted about how you can upgrade to eXPert PDF 6 Pro for free. However the upgrade to eXPert PDF 6 Pro was kind of tricky and many people are unable to do it properly. Well for the people who are unable to get eXPert PDF 6 Pro for free, you can now grab eXPert PDF 5 Pro (for free of course… duh =D). Unlike the procedure to get eXPert PDF 6 Pro, the procedure to get eXPert PDF 5 Pro is simple, straightforward and guaranteed to work (or your money back).

For those that don’t know what eXPert PDF 5 Pro is, here is a quick description of what eXPert PDF 5 Pro can do:

So how to get eXPert PDF 5 Pro?

NOTE: eXPert PDF 5 Pro is not supported on 64-bit machines. Sorry!

UPDATE 8/9/09: There is now a direct English version of eXPert PDF 5 Pro. Therefore you don’t need to follow any of the directions below since they are about how to get the German version and turn it in to English. Just download the English version from the promotion page (click here). You will need to register if you don’t have an Avanquest account already.

After you have eXPert PDF consider reading How To: Fix some eXPert PDF Pro annoyances (prevent PDF Printer from starting on boot and turn it off automatically when you are done using it).

  • First, since this is another Chip.de promotion, be sure to visit them once again as a symbolic “thank you”.
  • After that, visit the eXPert PDF 5 Pro promotion page.
  • If you already have an account with Avanquest, type in your email and click “Downloaden”. If you do not have an account with Avanquest, you must register – click “Anmeldung”:

  • If you clicked on “Anmeldung” to register, you will have to fill out a form with some information – click “Software jetzt gratis downloaden” when you are done:

  • If you already had an email address and you clicked on “Downloaden” or after you registered and clicked on “Software jetzt gratis downloaden” you will be brought to a screen where your serial key will be listed and there will be a download link for eXPert PDF 5 Pro:

Highlight and copy the serial key (it will also be emailed to you) and click on “Downloaden” to start download eXPert PDF 5 Pro.

NOTE: The download for eXPert PDF 5 Pro was extremely slow for me (took about an hour to download) so don’t be surprised if you get a slow download speed.

  • After you download eXPert PDF 5 Pro, run the installer. You will be brought to this screen:

Click on “eXPert PDF 5 Installieren”

NOTE: If you have a previous version of eXPert PDF installed, you may be asked to uninstall it first. Do so.

  • At the next screen it asks you to register or something (I am not exactly sure what it is since it is written in German). Just click “X” from the top right to close the window:

You will be asked something like “Are you sure you want to exit?”. Click “Yes”.

  • The next screen will bring up the actual installer. Install eXPert PDF 5 normally:

  • After you click on “Feertigstellen” at the last installer window you are done installing eXPert PDF 5 Pro. However if you run it, you will notice the program is in German. To turn the program into English go to the folder where you installed eXPert PDF 5 Pro. If you did not change it, by default, this folder will be C:/Program Files/Visagesoft/eXPert PDF 5. There is a “Resources” folder there. Right click on it and rename it to “Resources2”:

  • That is it. Now you have a fully functional eXPert PDF 5 Pro in English! However while the program is in English, the help files are not in English. If you would like your help files to be in English, download the the English help files I ripped from the English version (click here) and extract them into C:/Program Files/Visagesoft/eXPert PDF 5. Replace the existing files if prompted.

NOTE1: If you are getting an error while trying to download the help files from the above link, you can try to use the alternative download link: click here.

NOTE2: If you are having problems viewing the help files after you download them:

  1. Right-click on “expertpdf.chm”
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click Unblock.
  4. Double-click on “expertpdf.chm” to make sure it is now working.
  5. Repeat the same for “pdfeditor.chm”.

    You’re so nice. Have sought this for years, and we have quite a collection of both paid and free software.

    Sadly, it’s still downloading German version direct from ftp2.Avanquest… yet normally unproblematic XP3 machine just won’t take the program, giving error message that is eternally repeating, effectively forcing one to cancel the installation. Thank you for trying. You are a treasure.

    (Everything is in English right up to the actual installation, and then the error messages come, regarding expertpdf_v5.exe/german.cab.)
    It also says, “Stellen Sie sicher dass die Datei vorhanden ist und Sei darauf zugreifen konnen”…… which Google tells us translates fairly well into “Make sure that the file exists and can access it Be”
    Any ideas would be gratefully acknowledged. :-)

    JonathonP – If it’s so bad that you’r suspecting a virus I would rollback the machine using the System Restore function. If you don’t have an available restore point or it’s been too long since you installed the software (don’t want to loose everything installed since) then I would use REVO uninstaller to remove the PDF software and see if that solves the slow problem. If it does then you’re good and need to get some other PDF software (maybe NitroPDF). If not then running a free online scanner (like Bit Defender or Kaspersky or any of the many others available) may be the way to go.

    I have a problem with this software. It imposes itself as a Microsoft Word Add-in (as well as one for Excel and PowerPoint) — which is really unnecessary, as the user can simply “Print” to the printer driver when desired.

    The problem is that editing a document is much slower — I don’t understand why. Furthermore, I have tried advanced techniques to get rid of the Add-In, and the only success I have is to raise the Macro Security level. The add-in is not a macro to Normal.dot. It is not a “COM Add-in.” In fact, when I found the DLL which appears to be the offending source. I deleted it, but still the symptoms are there.

    Perhaps there is some kind of virus on my machine that suggests this product is the culprit, but ZoneAlarm Extreme cannot detect it, nor can Malaware Bytes. I’m have not figured out how to get rid of this annoyance. Anyone have any ideas? Windows XP – SP3.

    Note that I also previously installed Soft Xpansion PDF Quick Master 4.0 and still have that installed and it is NOT conflicting with Visage Xpert PDF 5.

    I am using –
    HP Compaq Presario V6000
    Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1
    Nothing special about my laptop.

    I am logged in as a standard/regular user, not as Administrator on my laptop. (Maybe people having probs should log in as Administrator.)

    I cannot understand probs that other users are having. So, the following is what I did.

    Downloaded from –

    Then installed using downloaded EXE file –
    PDF_eXPert5_DEU.exe

    Followed instructions as posted above by Ashraf(author) on this page –

    Using Windows File Explorer, I double-clicked the downloaded file –

    I selected the VisageSoft folder according to instructions above, and then confirmed that I wanted to proceed.

    And it all worked.

  • Sorry I was not very clear on my last post. What I meant to say is the problem maybe because one of your plugins is conflicting with eXPert PDF. Did you try to disable all your plugins then try it?

    Just a follow-up. I uninstalled and reinstalled eXPert PDF5. I have discovered something. When printing from FireFox (v3.09) to the eXPert PDF 5 printer I do not get any text unless it is in an image. When I print from Internet Explorer 7 the result looks good. If I print from Firefox to another PDF printer (called PDFCreator – a different product)the results look good. Any idea about why that might be? Is there a setting in Firefox that might be changed? The Firefox print preview looks fine until I look at the PDF produced from Visage.

    I use Ashampoo magical Uninstaller. It seems to work well. When I tried to run the original eXPertPDF5_DEU file it failed with a Windows XP popup which wanted to send a report to ?Microsoft? or maybe it was Avanquest (I don’t remember. I used WinRAR to extract it to a temp file and installed the expertpdf5_deu file and it all seemed to work correctly.
    Strangely I just tried to extract the file again and now I am getting a corrupted archive error message from WinRAR – it didn’t happen before but now I will have to download the file again in case I need to reinstall.

    It’s really late here in NY so I will check this site tomorrow for any responses. Thanks for all your help.

    What do you mean by this?

    Also, maybe try uninstalling/reinstalling? Be sure to use RevoUninstaller.

    If all else fails you can use CutePDF as a PDF printer. But keep in mind eXPert PDF still has a “Batch Creator” that allows you to convert images, html files, text files and other stuff to PDFs and merge PDFs together.

    Just checked Print Preview and this page looks good – text and graphics. Very strange. Previous to eXPert PDF Printer software I used PDFCreator (a freeware product) and that worked fine too but it’s functionality is extremely limited – no editing or even inserting new pages into an existing PDF. The eXPert PDF 5 Printer software installed without any issues (once I stopped trying to install it from the original exe file and instead uses RAR to decompress it to a folder. Maybe I’ll just have to use eXPert PDF Editor and skip the creator portion unless anyone has any ideas.

    It prints w/ text and graphics for me just fine (I just tested it on dotTech). Can you check “File” -> “Print Preview” and see if you can see the text and graphics under there? If not then it is a problem with your computer/browser settings and not eXPert PDF Printer.

    Like so many others have stated “thanks” for taking the time to detail the installation process. I had to resort to PDF5 when 6 would not show as registered software. Everything is in English but…I do have an issue. I picked a website in FireFox (it happened to be the Avanquest website) and tried to print to a PDF. When I do this all I see in the resulting file are the graphics. No text whatsoever. I then used a different site and got the same result. In fact this website is the same – graphics but no text. I checked the options but do not see how to modify it so that I get in the PDF what I see on the website. Is anyone else having this issue?

  • This is totally odd. Am I the only one whos PDF Creator is not in German?

    For those people who’s PDF Creator is in German, if you want you can try eXPert PDF Pro 4 instead: I have had no reports of parts of it being in French while the other parts in English.

    As for the help files: you should have downloaded a ZIP file. Just extract the files (Right click -> Extract here or something) and put them in C:/Program Files/Visagesoft/eXPert PDF 5.

    Thank you for the tutorial on getting this software and for all your reviews. My PDF Creator is also in German and the fix suggested by EC did not work because I do not have “turn on advanced text services” as a selection on the compatability tab.
    Also, I have the Help files on my desktop – how do I extract them into C:/Program Files/Visagesoft/eXPert PDF 5?

    I am having the same problem as Janet downloading the English help files. The error message is “Your download has failed. You have an invalid session set.” I tried clearing everything and using different browsers, but still no luck. Any suggestions?

    Hi this msg for Stanley:

    I had the same problem with getting help files to work properly even after unblocking. After you unblock and click OK, if you check properties again it will show the unblock option again. Some sort of Vista security thing, don’t really understand it myself. I had to go to ‘properties’ and then to ‘security’ and give full permissions (full control) to my user profile for the file. Then try the unblock feature and it should stick this time. check the help file and it should show the proper info. hope that helps.

    I seemed to have found the answer to my previous post:

    Right click the icon for “eXPert PDF Creator”, > Properties > Compatibility .

    Under “Input settings” check “turn on advanced text services” > Apply

    Hope this helps, the GUI is in English now.

    BTW, I used the English Help fix that Jean L P referred to above, and it worked flawlessly.

  • Huh. I’m getting 550KBps (KiloBYTES, not BITs) and I’m going to upload it here for anyone who wants it. Google Pages is fast, but only allows up to 10MB files, so I split it with Glary Utilities Pro:

    I cleared everything except History (which I use extensively) and tried again today, to no avail. From Googling, the most common suggestion was not to use a download manager. Gigaget Help says that if you want to do a particular download without it, press Alt when clicking on the DL link. So I did that. Still getting the same message…:-(…I’d like not to have to uninstall Gigaget….Ashraf–anyplace else I can download the help files?

    Thanks, Janet: glad Gigaget worked for you too — ‘s funny, what happens by way of accidental spin-offs from Ashraf’s labours!

    It’s also though not-so-funny that I also had difficulty DLing the English language help files (thanks, yet again, Ashraf) to begin with but I shut down IE, cleared the history / temp cache / cookies and went back to Filefront and the DL went through OK. And no, I didn’t register.

    However. . . this happened last night, before I’d installed Gigaget, so it was a ‘conventional’ download. Perhaps Gigaget is, um, doing something it shouldn’t???? (Though I can’t see how or why.)

    Anyway. Give it another try at FileFront — if memory serves aright, I *think* FF asked me to enable pop-ups before I reached the DL stage, and when these were temporarily enabled (for that session) I was hit with some horrendous page or other that I quickly closed. . . and then couldn’t DL at all.

    On the next attempt, however, I didn’t enable pop-ups. . . and the download went without a hitch.

    Well, after giving it some consideration, and having too many other things to do right now, I’m not going to try to upgrade to Ver 6. Just leave it for now at Ver. 5.

    If I do get around to trying it out and it works I’ll let you know.

    Thank you MikeR!!! I installed Giganet and yesterday’s 14 hour download was completed in no more than 15 min!!! (Unfortunately I didn’t note the start time…). That Giganet is incredible!! I highly recommend it to those of you who are running into slow downloads….

    So now I shall begin the Ashraf Route to installation of ExpertPDF 5……

    Today I installed something called GigaGet, on the basis that it ranked first in Gizmo’s preferences.

    I’ve no idea how it works (compared to conventional DL managers) but oh boy, the performance is staggering: although I’m on a very (repeat *very*) slow broadband connection, due to line distance from exchange, GigaGet downloaded the entire ExpertPDF 5.0 file in. . . 14 minutes.

    I don’t know if anyone else has ever tried it but on the basis of my experience today — i.e., mid-morning European time, so web traffic is as busy here in the UK as it is in Germany — GigaGet’s speed is, well, incredible.

    Maybe one for Ashraf to have a look at and, if he thinks it suitable, to add to his list of recommended freebies????

    Hey, some of us still have dial-up (not very many, but still). PNGs would take much longer than the absurdly long time images already take to load with this stone age internet.

    This is probably nitpicking, but for registering with Avanquest, the name blocks are backwards. (Vorname is first name.)

    Thanks again, Ashraf. I also couldn’t get the v6 working. This one was fine, due to your detailed information. I got the same error message as Tony Osime, but then I followed step by step your instructions and finally I could use the software. I also did the copy/paste file transfers for the help in English and everything is working perfectly. Thanks for all your help. I’m glad the writing season is still on. Take care.

    YEA it worked I have an english version of eXpert PDF Editor 5 and a German version of eXpert PDF Creator 5……OK now I downloaded the english help files right where you said to and they work…..I changed the resource file so how do I fix this?

    This version’s incorporation of a pdf to Word converter makes it a very attractive proposition. . .

    However: the DL speed from the german website is so excruciatingly slow that I’ve now had three timed-out failures where the DL reached 8%, 16% and 9% respectively.

    Ah well. Worth a try!

  • I am paying for everything. I just don’t want to be forced to move to a VPS or private server just yet (it would cost me 8-10x more per month then what I am paying right now). This is actually also why I don’t have the forums back up; I will have them up soon as I am forced to move up on the hosting ladder.

    Third party hosts are just a pain to work with when it comes to pictures.

    Also, I used to have PDF 6… before I formatted =(. I have yet to try to upgrade yet because it is not very urgent for me.

    Ouch. You may or you may not get a better connection later. I think it is particularly bad for you considering where you live. I got a 10 KB per sec speed when downloading PDF 5 and I live in the USA (download is from Germany).

    I was thinking the same thing: “Can I upgrade to PDF 6 from PDF 5?” I will test it out when I get home. However I bet the samething will happen as with PDF 4: Some people may be able to do it, some may not.

    I also had serious problems trying to install version 6, so just stayed with version 4.

    Currently downloading version 5 and going to give it a try. (taking forever to download and I’m using highspeed broadband approx 10 k/s)

    Anyway, question: Do you know if one can upgrade to version 6 from version 5?

    Any ideas how to get this to work? The program won’t open.

    Hi Ashraf!

    I tried downloading 4 (for upgrade to 6) from the French site and I am now trying to download 5 from the German site. My ADSL connection says I have over 13 hours to go for either!!! Both sites give me between 29 and 618 bytes/sec (it seems to change now and then)!!! Do you think if I wait till another time it might be faster?

    As you know very well, unlike you, I had lots of problems with the HELP FILES (remember??) when I tried to upgrade from Expert PDF 4 to 6 and I stopped working on this issue because the method published on your blog by PAUL was quite difficult to understand and implement.

    So the question is: what’s the difference between this freebie and EXPERT PDF 6??

    If I’m not wrong you were able to upgrade to EXPERT PDF 6 without any hassle, weren’t you??

    So I suppose you don’t need this freebie…right?

    Just wondering why just this German website is committed to offer such great freebies almost on a daily basis…LOL!!

    What do you make of it??

    Your solution worked, I had to search for the Visage folder since my registry key was different.

    Program installed OK.

    Now I am trying to download the English help files. I am caught in some sort of “invalid session loop”. Hope I come out of it soon. Is there an alternative way to download the English help files?

  • Hmm… I don’t see why it should Rob. However seeing as I don’t have multiple PDF printers installed, I can’t confirm this.

    I am downloading as we speak.
    I read that it installs a virtual printer.
    I currently have DoPDF 5 which is a virtual printer.
    My ink dried up years ago, so whenever i print from any program, DoPDF has been reliably creating PDF’s for me.
    DoPDF’s PDF creation has been perfection every time, so I hope to keep using it as the default printer.
    I suspect I will use Expert PDF to edit existing PDF’s only.

    Will Expert PDF’s virtual printer, cause problems for my DoPDF ?

    PNGs are usually bigger in size which is why I use JPGs – I get more control (I usually lower the quality of the JPG depending on how big it is). There is no need to extremely high quality screenshots for these guides; maybe if I was posting pictures of some sort.

    Are you getting that message while trying to install eXPert PDF 5 Pro? Or are you getting that message when trying to uninstall?

    Yes, you need to uninstall all parts of any previous installation of eXPert PDF Pro.

    However I have run into that same error many times so if the uninstalling does not work, there is a simple registry fix that needs to be applied:

    1. Uninstall all versions of eXPert PDF Pro.
    2. Go into Program Files and delete all the VisageSoft folders there; there may be none or there may be multiple ones depending on what you did.
    3. Open up regedit. Go to HKEY_USERS/S-1-5-21-3023203539-2722991495-3821558887-1000/SOFTWARE/. Find the “Visage Software” folder. Delete it.
    4. Reinstall eXPert PDF 5 Pro
