Netflix users clock 1 billion hours of video playback in June, breaks all known and humane records

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has made a Facebook post mentioning that the Netflix subcribers watched a total of more than about 1 billion hours of video during June 2012, making it a first time in the history for Netflix:

Congrats to Ted Sarandos, and his amazing content licensing team. Netflix monthly viewing exceeded 1 billion hours for the first time ever in June. When House of Cards and Arrested Development debut, we’ll blow these records away. Keep going, Ted, we need even more!

It is not 100% clear if this number is of online streaming video content only or includes DVD rentals, too. However, considering the total number of Netflix users, on average each subscriber watches just above one hour of video every day.

Netflix activity has been witnessing a gradual rise from the start of the first quarter of this year, The last two quarters of 2011 saw the viewership of Netflix decreased by a significant amount, following a series of poor business decisions. For example, the company had planned to re-brand and separate its DVD by mail service from the rest of its services, a decision which was taken back later due to public outrage.

Netflix has been trying hard from the fourth quarter of 2011 to try to get back on its feett and make a stride forward, not only to makeup for its mistakes earlier in the year but also to shine above growing competition. It seems to have also succeeded in its mission, at least in the short term. Netflix has about 26 million users worldwide as of the first quarter of 2012, which is up by 1.5 million from that of last quarter.
