About Windows Software of the Day

Windows has hundreds of thousands of programs. Because of this great volume and lack of a central store, software discovery (aka finding new and useful programs) is extremely difficult. With our Windows Software of the Day initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three programs, allowing our readers to discover new software, daily. Enjoy! [Subscribe to our Windows section to never miss an article: RSS Feed | E-mail]

Snowbird

Want a Windows Explorer replacement that has actual, functioning search and a nice, bread crumb style interface? Snowbird is just the tool for the job, making quick work of any folder you throw at it.

Snowbird is not really a Windows Explorer replacement, in that it doesn’t automatically take over when you open a folder. It does however allow you to do plenty of file browsing inside itself, and has its own, home-grown copy and paste mechanism. It also features a really nice search that doesn’t leave you hanging like Windows search so often does. Instead of using half-baked indexes, Snowbird searches once you start typing, much like a much-improved version of Windows XP’s search. This means it finds things slower but more consistently, which is much more important.

Snowbird is a nicely designed Windows Explorer replacement with a nice search box built in.

TEDinator

TED Talks are awesome: they’re easily accessible, easily understood talks about “ideas worth spreading”, and there are new ones every week. However, if you’re looking to download and archive or download and watch one offline, the official website won’t be of much help to you. Instead, try TEDinator.

TEDinator is a free program that lets you download talks quite easily. It shows at which TED event and when each talk was recorded, meaning you can download a specific event or time easily. If you want subtitles, they’re readily available for download, too, meaning you don’t have to scurry around the web looking for them.

TEDinator is a nice program for downloading TED talks, and even has quite a nice interface. It’s free for all to use, and is all-around awesome.

NoteTab Light

Want an advanced text editing tool with features such as tables of content, automatic formatting, and many numbers of find and replace options? NoteTab Light is just the tool for the job, with an advanced featureset to please anyone’s eyes.

NoteTab Light is a very heavy program on first launch; it’s hard to understand what’s what. However, if you ignore what you don’t need and only use what you want, it makes a great text editor. It can automatically create HTML tags, lets you write advanced scripts, and do tons of messing around with everything you could think of.

To be honest, NoteTab Light is not for everyone. It’s complicated and doesn’t come naturally, but it’s insanely powerful. If you’re looking for a “we do everything” notepad program, NoteTab Light might be for you.
