About Android Apps of the Day

Android has over 450,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our Android Apps of the Day [6] initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! Apps for August 6, 2012

Droid Towers

[9]Are you a fan of games like TinyTower, where you can build and manage an entire building? Droid Towers may be the game for you. Instead of only managing the shops and residential areas, Droid Towers lets you actually manage your building, including noise, crime, population, employment, and more.

Droid Towers is reminiscent of some earlier Flash games, and if you’ve played them, you might get the feeling at first that it’s quite similar. However, its advanced controls separate it and put it a step above the rest. It’s much more of a real game than things like Tiny Tower, as it’s not designed to make you waste your time but rather enjoy your time.

The free version of the game is limited to 15 floors and 40 grid spaces wide. A $2 upgrade (usually $3) lets you build infinitely wide and high. Overall, Droid Towers is a fun little game and is quite enjoyable.

Price: Free with $2.99 $1.99 (sale) “unlimited” version

[10]Version discovered: v1.0.49

Requires: Android 2.2+

Download size: 8.5MB

Holoku

[12]If there’s one type of app that’s both extremely popular and extremely ugly, it’d have to be Sudoku. If you’re looking for one that won’t hurt your eyes as soon as you open it, Holoku is key to your enjoyment. It’s a beautifully designed, woefully underused Holo-themed Sudoku app.

Holoku comes with 500 boards, split evenly between five difficulty levels. That means there’s plenty of levels to go around for everyone, and there are more level packs coming every month for free. It’s also optimized for 7″ tablets, including the Nexus 7, so it also makes a great tablet Sudoku app.

Overall, Holoku is a beautiful, fun Sudoku app that won’t burn out your retinas at a second’s notice. It’s $1.99 on Google Play, and has a free 20-level demo.

Price: $1.99 with free 20-level demo

[13]Version discovered: v1.2

Requires: Android 2.3+

Download size: 1.7MB

School Scheduler

[17]Managing class schedules can be an absolute pain. The free app School Scheduler takes all of that pain away, leaving you with a simple and easy way to see what classes you have, and when. It also includes a $1.50 upgrade that allows you to sync with Google Calendar.

School Scheduler allows you to add courses, and within courses, classes. These classes can be recurring every week or every other week on any of the days of the week. Once added, they’ll show up on the days you have them under the schedule view.

Having all of your classes scheduled on one device is nice, but really having them on your phone, tablet, and laptop would be much better. That’s why, for $1.50, School Scheduler can sync your classes to Google Calendar. (The free version can sync a single course.)

School Scheduler is a must-have for any student with a crazy scheduler. It’d be nice to see an integrated alarm, but even as it is, School Scheduler is a great app for managing your schedule.

Price: Free with $1.50 Sync upgrade

[18]Version discovered: v1.2

Requires: Android 2.1+

Download size: 610KB

dotTechies: We have tested all the apps listed above. However, Android Apps of the Day articles are not intended as “reviews” but rather as “heads-up” to help you discover new apps. Always use your best judgement when downloading apps, such as trying trial/free versions before purchasing paid apps, if applicable.
