About iOS Apps of the Day

iOS has over 600,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our iOS Apps of the Day initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! [Subscribe to dotTech to never miss an article: RSS Feed | E-mail]

Apps for [August 22, 2012]

Remoter VNC – Remote Desktop

Remoter VNC is an aggressively priced and easy-to-use VNC client. In a couple steps, you will be able to access and use your desktop/laptop computer as if you were using a typical mouse and keyboard. When first using the app, I was most impressed with Remoter VNC’s uniquely designed mouse pad and how crisp the connection was to the computer. The app gives you a ton options in terms of not only how you control your remote computer, but also what you want to see on the screen when you do. Let’s just say I was pleasantly surprised that an app priced so low did so much.

(Note: Please be aware that to use this app, there are few things you must do. You have to download a free VNC server, get a DNS address if your cable provider uses a dynamic IP, and forward a port in your router. I will be writing a articlet in the near future that will cover all of this.)

Goodreads

Goodreads is a companion app for the popular book recommendation site. The app provides the ability to keep track of your own readings, create a review of those same books, and share them with your friends. Similarly you can check in on what your friends are reading as well. Goodreads puts all of these books and corresponding reviews together to make a massive database that is at any member’s fingertips.

What I found amazing is the fact that you can literally scan any book at the store to see what the reviews are before buying it. Goodreads also has fantastic options to explore new books, which is something that many folks struggle with.

Price: Free

Version discovered: 2.0.1

Requires: iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad; iOS 4.0 and up

Ultimate Gem

Ultimate Gem is a beautifully designed and no nonsense match-3 game. The simplicity of this app is what I find addicting. In Puzzle mode, your goal is to clear as many gems as possible, but to obtain a certain score in doing so. When you start playing, the score is easier to accomplish, but as the game becomes more challenging, you will eventually find yourself just getting to the required score. When you don’t get there, the game is over. In Time Attack mode, you must clear as many gems as you can, as soon as possible.

The only problem I have with this app is the price. You can probably find similarly desirable games in this genre for a dollar or two less. I was lucky enough to get it awhile back when it was discounted.

Price: $2.99 (Universal iPad version is $5.99)

Version discovered: 1.6

Requires: iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad; iOS 3.0 and up

Download size: 27.7 MB

dotTechies: We have tested all the apps listed above. However, iOS Apps of the Day articles are not intended as “reviews” but rather as “heads-up” to help you discover new apps. Always use your best judgement when downloading apps, such as trying trial/free versions before purchasing paid apps, if applicable.whatsmyip.org
