Anyone else notice Chrome ads on Google.com for people running Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Opera?

Chrome [2] may be dominating browser wars [3] but apparently Google [4] isn’t satisfied. Recently — and by recently I mean past few days, if memory serves — I’ve noticed an ad on Google.com telling me to install Chrome. I first saw the ad on Google.com in the form of a blue banner that ran across the top of the window while running Internet Explorer [5]. Then I saw the same ad in Firefox [6]. Then the ad changed a the rectangular ad that sits on the right side of the screen, as shown in the screenshot above. And now I’ve confirmed the ad is showing in Opera [7] too but not in Chrome (duh). The same is probably happening for other non-Chrome browsers [8], like Safari.

I’m not too sure how I feel about Google running ads for its own browser on the most popular Internet destination without giving a chance for competitors to do the same. I mean, yeah, I get it — Google.com is Google’s website and they are advertising their own browser. No harm in that, right? I won’t claim this new ad for Chrome violates anti-trust laws because, frankly, I have no idea if it does. However, I will say that it just feels dirty — I must see an ad for Chrome just because I use a browser other than Chrome? Bah, humbug!

For what it is worth, clicking the ‘X’ closes the ad and the ad does not reappear until you clear your browser cookies. Still, despite being able to get rid of it, it feels wrong.

If you are seeing the same ad, let us know in the comments [9] below. Also feel free to express your thoughts on this move by Google.
