Google’s Eric Schmidt believes Android is winning the war against Apple

In an interview with Bloomberg, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt has made comments that should stir up fanboy wars all over. Despite all the different players, it’s pretty safe to say that it all comes down to Android versus Apple — a battle that Eric Schmidt believes Google is winning.
This is a huge platform change; this is of the scale of 20 years ago — Microsoft versus Apple. We’re winning that war pretty clearly now. […]
It’s an interesting comparison to make really, and I’m not sure it’s quite the same situation. You could liken it to Microsoft versus Apple in some ways, but in the end, this is a very different Apple we’re talking about today. One thing I do agree with, however, is his take on Google’s “core strategy.”
The core strategy is to make a bigger pie. We will end up with a not perfectly controlled and not perfectly managed bigger pie by virtue of open systems.
The key here is the bigger pie. Android has a ton of handsets available, with some even indistinguishable from each other and quality not being consistent due to the range of prices. Fragmentation is also a problem in terms of software. But despite those things, its reach has grown a staggering amount the last couple of years. Only time will tell whose strategy will work.
Competition is good for us, and whoever loses this “battle”, we win.
