Every year National Geographic holds a photo contest. 2012′s results are in. In total, National Geographic says there were over 22,000 entries. Out of these 22,000 entries, a winner was picked for each category (‘Nature’, ‘People’, and ‘Places’), an overall ‘Grand Prize’ winner was selected, ‘Viewers’ Choice’ photos were picked, and some photos were given honorable mentions. Below are the three winners plus a few other interesting ones that received honorable mention or Viewers’ Choice. Check them out:

Personally, I feel the squirrel with its head in the snow is my favorite. Which one is yours? Let us know in the comments!

Also, the above are not all the winners/entries in National Geographic’s contest; they are just the three top winners plus other photos I found to be interesting. If you want to view the remaining photos, hit up the source link below.

I’ll take the mountain as my favorite.

I don’t see any foxes or squirrels on it, though.

It is not a squirrel. Is a Red Fox… as the Firefox logo!

Fox or Squirrel; doesn’t really matter. It’s my favorite too. I to believe it’s a Fox, but can see how it could be mistaken for a Squirrel at first quick glance.

The shaking Tiger and Mountain with the visible wind stream are runner ups.

What I would like to know is; does anyone know what those men are doing on those poles? They appear to be fishing for something, but what? Kind of like Deer hunters, but I’ve never seen or heard of anything like that before. Anyone know?

I have an ongoing love affair with Cheetahs, so that wins for me.

@JonE: They are fishing. Stilt fishing is a typical fishing technique only seen in Sri Lanka. The fishermen sit on a cross bar called a petta tied to a vertical pole planted into the coral reef. This long exposure shot shows how unstable their position is.

@Kathryn: With his exceptional hearing a red fox has targeted a mouse hidden under 2 feet of crusted snow. Springing high in the air he breaks through the crusted spring snow with his nose and his body is completely vertical as he grabs the mouse under the snow.

More informative captions would have been more helpful.

My monitor color may be off, but I believe that’s a coyote with it’s head in the snow and not a red fox.
It’s not a squirrel for sure.

@Eric989: Give us a break. Do you have to be spoonfed as well?

Ashraf provided a link to the website. A description of each photo is on the website. That’s where I got the information I have already posted about two of the pictures.

    And (for trent2), it’s a bloody fox!!
