[iPhone] Send messages or reminders to yourself in the future with HiFutureSelf

mzl.ifcwbroc.320x480-75Have you ever found a letter that you wrote to your future self when you were a kid? A lot of people had to write these kinds of letters for school projects back in the day, and they can be pretty amusing to read. Now, you can give yourself that little thrill whenever you want with HiFutureSelf, an iPhone app developed by dBelement, LLC.

What is it and what does it do

Main Functionality

HiFutureSelf is a great way to send messages, reminders, notes of encouragement, and more to your future self. With the latest update, you can also send these messages to friends. Set up reminders to build new habits, or send notes of encouragement for when you know you’re gonna have a rough week at the office.

Pros

  • Send an unlimited number of messages
  • Messages do not use up your SMS quota
  • You can delete ALL messages free of charge, just tap the “Delete All Messages” button
  • Easy to navigate and thoughtfully designed

Cons

  • You need a Pro account to reschedule messages or repeat messages on a daily/monthly/yearly basis
  • You can only send messages to your future self during this calendar year

Discussion

mzl.uwqqqbys.320x480-75Sending messages to yourself is very easy. Compose the text, select a delivery date that’s some time in the future, and you’re done! In the latest version (Version 1.6), there’s also a feature where you can send future messages to friends as well. After hitting “Send” you will have the option to send that same message to a friend. Your friend will receive a link to the message and can add it to their HiFutureSelf app with one tap.

If you like, you can upgrade to the Pro version of the app for just 99 cents. When you upgrade, you get the ability to edit/delete individual messages, repeat messages, select one of six custom ringtones, and get rid of the ads.

You can send an unlimited number of messages free of charge, and they won’t go towards your SMS count at all. It’s easy to delete your cache of old messages all in one go, but you will need to upgrade to Pro to be able to delete just one or two at a time. There does not appear to be a maximum number of characters for each message.

Conclusion and download link

As awesome as it would be to send yourself messages years and years into the future, this is still a pretty handy app for setting reminders or performance goals. It’s not the same as finding a letter that you wrote to your future self in grade school, but it’s still pretty nifty. Check out this free, simple app if you want a way to incentivize your progress towards major life goals, or if you just want to create a personal time capsule for fun.

Check out Vuture. This app is in beta, but upon release will allow you to record a video and send it to any cell number, email address or Facebook page at any time in the future.

The best part is the video is stored in the cloud so you can delete it off your phone once it’s uploaded.

I’d rather have an app to send a message to my past self. For instance, “Dear 1986 Seamus – This is 2013 Seamus. Buy stock in this new company called Microsoft. Also, on October 26, 1997, sell everything.”

Ick. The constraints on this offer are a far cry away from our roots as critics of GAOTD offerings. This never would have been posted by Ashraf. The app has a shelf life of less than a year! Meh.
