Android apps of the day [March 23, 2012]

Android has over 450,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our Android Apps of the Day initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! Angry Birds Space

Angry Birds is back in a new game Angry Birds Space. In Angry Birds Space you are in space trying to beat the evil pigs. The game play style for Angry Birds Space is similar to the original Angry Birds and Angry Birds Rio (i.e. using slingshots to sling birds at pigs) except with different mechanics, such as navigating zero-gravity and planetary gravitational rings. You start off with the familiar red birds  but as you progress through the 60 levels you get more birds, including new birds with new “superpowers” never seen before in other versions of Angry Birds.

Angry Birds Space is free and ad-supported. There is an ads-free version called Angry Birds Premium which costs $0.99. A version specifically for tablets – Angry Birds Space HD – is available for $2.99.

Price: Free, $0.99, $2.99

Version discovered: v1.0.1

Requires: Android 1.6 and up

Download size: 23 MB

Group Ringtones

Android allows users to customize ringtones for each contact. However, Android does not have the ability to set a ringtone for a group of contacts — you must do it for each contact individually. Group Ringtones is an app that allows users to ringtones for groups of contacts easily. All you do is select the contacts group, select the ringtone, and Group Ringtones does the rest. (For anyone curious, what Group Ringtones does is it goes in and changes the ringtone for each individual contact in the group; but you don’t need to worry about that — Group Ringtones does all the heavy lifting.)

According to the comments for the app, Group Ringtones may not work for some devices; the major incompatible devices seem to be Droid X2, Motorola Bionic, and Samsung Galaxy S II. (It probably has to do with the ROMs on those devices and how they store contacts.) Group Ringtones works flawlessly on my Nexus S. The only way you will know if Group Ringtones works on your device or not is giving it a try yourself.

Group Ringtones is free with no ads. If you want to support development of the app, you can purchase Group Ringtones Donate for $1.99. Take note, however, the donate version has no extra features.
