I just found a little gem, Yadis! Backup. The program provides real time backup to just about any destination.

I’ve been looking for a real time/continuous backup program for a while, to make backup to my WD MyBook World Edition (NAS). The Memeo backup software that came with WD is very buggy. Recently Memeo has started to ask me to upgrade to a paid version. I’ve tried Genie Timeline free edition, it’s simple, has a nice clean interface, and it does a good job monitoring files, but it is not real time, it backs up new and changed files every 60 minutes).

I was wondering “why isn’t there a backup program like the Dropbox app, but without Dropbox?” simple and instant.

This I what I like most about Yadis!:

• It’s configurable but still easy to use.
• It keeps track of changes made when you’re on the go, and backs them up the destination is available again.
• It offers versioning to keep different versions of the same file.
• It offers “target validation” to ensure that the backup is made to the correct device. So if you destination is a external hard drive, it won’t start backup to a thumb drive if that is plugged in and gets the hard drive’s normal drive letter assigned.
• It preserves full path structure

A major con is that restore function doesn’t seem to work in version 1.10.3. Maybe it’s because my backup destination is on a network drive. I can live with that because restoring files isn’t something I do frequently, and I can still access the backup’ed files explorer way. I’m also still able search within the backup. But that is defiantly something that the developer needs to work on.
