Hey guys. I was planning on spending around $600 to make my own computer. I want to build a desktop computer that can play games without minimal lag. I want to know which parts are cheep but good enough to make it consider as a “gaming computer”.

Can anyone recommend me which parts I should get to build one? Thanks.

I built myself a computer back in February. If you want heres the links for all the parts.

When I bought this, it totaled to around  $550 with shipping and handling and taxes. But rebates at that time significantly lowered the price.

Edit:

Some parts like a DVD drive I already had so I didn’t buy it. But what I listed here is the main and necessary components.

While the 2.8 Ghz dual core is not a lot, it is a model designed for overclocking and it is possible to unlock the processor to 4 cores.

Just a quick note:  i3s=bad, i5s=good, i7s=best.

Oh thanks! That’s what I needed to know too. So i3 is that bad??? Why is that? Is it like Pentium 2 or something?

BTW, no one has to tell me how to build one. My friend’s uncle’s son or who ever is gonna help me assemble it. He’s a pro and a university graduate for… hmm… I don’t remember. I just know he’s pro at computers.

Do processors really matter for gaming? I mean up to a certain point? I have a Pentium Mobile Dual-Core for my laptop with 4GB ram, and I’m pretty happy with the performance(and it’s Vista too!). I’m pretty sure an i3s processor beats my Pentium.

Is it true a computer’s gaming power really comes down to its video card? (considering your ram and processor are not too shabby, like mine for example)

It’s not that bad. It’s just their lowest end of their current line of processors.

I’d think they matter at least a bit.  I mean, there’s still all the stuff going on that isn’t graphics…?

I think the gaming power is the video card.

It’s kinda true though. My Asus laptop uses a “Centrio” processor… but the Nividia graphics card is really awesome. Though, not awesome enough to allow Halo 2 and Call of Duty 4 to run in their highest settings.Frown

600 bucks for a gaming machine and asking for no graphics lag is kinda stretching it a bit Laugh but would depend on what kind of games you’re playing. If they’re just free MMOs then an Nvidia 8800GT coupled with a decent processor would be more than sufficient, even none-multi cores can handle them fine since most online games aren’t optimized for multicore processors.

i3’s aren’t bad at all imho and according to benchmarks (http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i3+550+%40+3.20GHz) even comparable in performance to older high end quad cores, just that they lack turbo boost which their siblings have which can, theoretically, give you a better gaming experience. If you can squeeze in a few bucks more then go for an i5 instead of an i3.

Alright. Thanks everyone! Though, I forgot to mention I’m not buying the parts yet until, say after New Years perhaps. I’m just going to plan ahead so nothing goes wrong.

BTW, is it “to run in their highest settings” or “to run at their highest settings”?

I’m not very sure… Confused

No… I’m thinking of using Ubuntu instead. Then soon, I will be Locutus’ student. Laugh

No, Wine is a program that provides an implementation of core Windows APIs, replicates the Windows file structure, and does all sorts of other stuff.  In short: it allows you to run about 70% of Windows programs on other OSs.
