I'd like to get opinions regarding which freeware programs do you feel are important to have on your computer. I'm not too computer savvy; looking through various websites and blogs I find differing opinions on freeware.
I'm interesting in keeping my computer free of viruses, trojans, hackers. Additionally, I'd like to keep the drives clean, running smoothly and perform at an optimal level.
Certainly, I don't know of all the freeware that exists to enhance performance and it's likely that programs exist that I should be using on my computer. I'd appreciate any advice of which programs perform the best.
I'm using Windows XP and using Firefox as a browser. Any Firefox extension suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks for your input.
I highly recommend SiteLauncher for Firefox. So useful for getting to your bookmarks and favorite sites quickly; I love it.
Grab it at http://www.donesmart.com/sitelauncher/
OfflineJerseys,
Although the post needs to be updated, a good place to start for security applications is http://dottech.org/tipsntricks/3174

I would recommend CCLeaner (run once a week) and Glary Utilities (once a week) . Free versions of course.
Simply Google them to find the websites. AVG Free version is great for virus protection but don't run another virus program like McAffee or Norton. It's like having too many cooks in the kitchen. They don't play well together.
I use Firefox as well. None better. I use gmail for email. Best for spam control.
OfflineI installed:
Advanced SystemCare
Malwarebytes' Antimalware
AVG Anti-Rootkit Free
CleanMyRegistry (without installation)
Ccleaner
EasyCleaner
Fixmyregistry (without installation)
Fsecure Blacklight (rootkits)
GlaryUtilities
GMer (rootkits) – without instal.)
RegSeeker (without installation)
RogueRemover Free
RootAlyzer (without installation)
Sophos Anti-Rootkit
Spyware Blaster
The Cleaner 2010
ThreatFire
TuneUp Utilities 2008 (Free key)
Zemana Anti-logger (Free key)
Most are freeware; they are not necessarily needed (I would say they are complementary), but I start them once in a while.
I don't use Firefox (sometimes).

My goodness. You have quite a "stable" of horses there.
The ones I have and use are these in your "stable"
Ccleaner
AVG Anti-Rootkit Free
AVG Anti Virus
GlaryUtilities
Malwarebytes' Antimalware
I don't think you need all those to keep up with. AVG AntiVirus runs everyday, the others I run once a week when I remember to do it.
You asked for an opinion. ;-)
I download a lot of stuff everyday and try them. Haven't been caught with a nasty one yet. Now watch my luck change just becauswe I wrote that to you.
Why don't you burn them onto a CD for use later if need be? They are taking up hard drive room now and will "live" just fine uninstalled on a CD or DVD until later.
Noting to do with Protection but one program I think shoud be on everybody's PC is Irfanview 4.25 and its plugins. Master that one program and you have "PC talent" in the eyes of others.
David (been running PC's since 1981 when they came out)
Offline@ David
Together, they take roughly 180 Mb on the PC which I can pass .
Like you, I never had any major problems either so far (no doubt thanks to the precautions
I take before downloading anything on internet … official website, notice Mc Web Advisor, etc.).
I have seen, however with time (and I use a PC for less time than you) that the use of various programs of "clean(s)ing" was needed.
None of them is able to detect all unnecessary or suspicious entries and it is better, therefore, use several…from time to time.
Threatfire, Spyblaster et Zemana are residents and does not conflict with the antivirus (Avast) or firewall (Comodo).
However, I believe i'll abandoned Zemana after the free year of testing.
