PDF-XChange is Adobe-alternative in today's Hive that boasts snappy load times and basic functionality that outpaces the basic functionality of Adobe Reader. With PDF-XChange you can open and browse PDF documents, perform simple page annotations with drawings and text, and type outside of preset form boxes by using the PDF-XChange typewriter tool to place text wherever you want. Advanced features like reorganizing pages and text extraction are only available with the Pro upgrade. PDF-Xchange is available as a portable application.

Definitely SumatraPDF. It has come a loong way in the recent years and I would dub it as one of the best in terms of being lightweight - which is what you need in this case. It doesn't have all the bells and features as the others out there, but if all you need is a reader, this is it (it also installs a browser plugin). From my experiences, the rendering quality is hardly discernible, if not better, than the other bloated commercial readers.

Thanks for asking this question a couple of years ago, and all the answers folks!

I've just acquired a relic: an HP / Compaq TC1000 Tablet PC ;) I've had the use of one for an international trip one time, and liked the compactness, and it's kinda cool to use something so behind the times yet ground-breaking - makes me feel all tech-y.

Back to the topic: it runs WinXP TabletPC Edition, and is small on resources: less than 500MB RAM and the ol' Transmeta Crusoe processor running at about 1GHz SOOOOOOO...... what would now be a small, light, effective PDF reader?

And additionally are there any eBook readers (a-la Kindle) suitable for said beastie?

Thanks all!

I passed on the GOTD, but I got this one (with no problems)and set it as default.

You are right it does have array of features. I tinkered with it a bit. I like the typewriter feature.

We are now 3 for 3. Still tapping toe on Lavasoft. Hmmm free?? I am thinking yes.

You're right (of course) about the tools of PDF Viewer (I have it also on my PC).
I don't use very much such a program and the toolbar was disapeared probably during an update.
Following your reply and a little research I could it made reappear by pressing F11.

Thanks.

I much prefer it to Foxit (others will disagree I'm sure, but it comes down to personal preference). I scored a licence for Nitro Pro version 6 some time back when they were being given away. And while it's a really good prog, I ended up going back to PDF-XChange Viewer.
