yes, OTA update using wifi does not need itunes (and, apple is really good with that, i dislike my nokia n8 OTA update since it fails more often than not), but that does not solve my dilemma...still i don't find a damn way to avoid itunes/quicktime, and at the same time, enjoy the latest firmware in my freaking ipod touch.

Sorry about that, but at least it has got the post active.
At the risk of making you cross again, have you tried searching for 'iTunes replacement'? I just did and top of the list was: "CopyTrans Manager".

take it easy jayesstee, i did not mean to be tough…

copytrans manager does not do the job either for me because it may ask you to downgrade your firmware which sucks.

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-ways-to-sync-music-to-your-iphone-without-itunes/

however, if you downgrade, it will allow you to transfer songs without itunes. apparently, you still need to depend on itunes for OS update. so…

thanks for your response. if you would read my post carefully, you would see i already mentioned sharepod.

Sorry, I did read your post carefully when it was first posted I saw SharePod a few days later and remembered your requirement, but not all the detail. Sorry about that, but at least it has got the post active.

At the risk of making you cross again, have you tried searching for 'iTunes replacement'? I just did and top of the list was: "CopyTrans Manager". The link is: http://www.copytrans.net/copytransmanager.php

The fifth result was: "Here's Five Alternatives to iTunes 10", link is: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/29716/heres-five-alternatives-to-itunes-10-for-easily-managing-your-ipod/

CopyTrans Manager is top of this list and appears to be portable! I know from another post that you love portable apps.

Hope there is something useful there. If CopyTrans Manager works out, post back here, I might well also ditch the iTunes/QuickTime imposition.

You have to "jailbreak" the device to do what you are talking about.

to use sharepod and itunes hack or to use sharepod and itunes, you do not need to jailbreak the device. however, some other methods will make you jailbreak your ipod. still then, i did not find a single method that uses jailbreak and can free ipod touch from itunes and quicktime completely. therefore, jailbreaking is not going to help.

thanks for your response. if you would read my post carefully, you would see i already mentioned sharepod. it does not work unless you have itunes installed or use itunes hack (however, the hack installs quicktime, at least part of it, and apple mobile device support). therefore, sharepod is good for people who don't like itunes interface, NOT for people who don't want itunes/quicktime at all.

There is an App. (for windows) called "Sharepod" Don't know if it is what you're looking for (it's on my list of "to be tried"), but the developer says:

"SharePod is easy to use and works! Heres some of the main features:

Add & remove music and videos from your iPod

Add, remove and edit playlists

Add & remove album art

View and backup photos

Copy music, videos and playlists from your iPod to PC

Import music/videos into your iTunes library, including playlists and ratings

Tag editing

Drag n' drop to and from Explorer

Simple, clean interface

Quick to load and use with no unnessary complicated features

Support for iPhone and iTouch (Thanks to Nikias Bassen, Paul Sladen, Jonathan Beck, and Christophe Fergeau for making this possible)

And whats more, SharePod is completely free! SharePod was designed from the start to be lightweight, quick and responsive, it has all (well hopefully most...!) of the features you need and none of the features you dont."

You can find this at: http://www.getsharepod.com/

Good luck

I find one MUST use iTunes if one has iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad, one way or the other. There are workarounds, however, NONE of the methods can avoid using iTunes at some point. For example, if you use MediaMonkey/Winamp/SharePod, you can get iTunes hack (that only installs Apple mobile device support and QuickTime) in order to transfer the songs to your device using that 3rd party software and without using iTunes, however, what about iOS update? Even though you can download iOS update without iTunes (workaround exists), you must use iTunes to install those updates.

Bottomline: I am still using iTunes/QuickTime in my PC since I have an iPod Touch and I need to view QuickTime contents in Apple website (and, in some other educational websites, too).

If anybody knows any method that can avoid iTunes/QuickTime all the way, let me know! I wanna avoid them because they are too heavy and less useful.
