OfflineTotalCommander is the choice of most in a lot of circles, it's not FREE but you may use it for a very long time…10 + years and still counting.
ghilser.com is the home site as well as most of the heavy hitters like nonags.com, majorgeeks.com
Directory Opus is just a PITA i find it too intrusive on a system and to think they want over $70.00 for this overpriced filemanager, it makes Windows look very good.
Take a hard look at TotalCommander

I used many including Qdir, TotalCommander (Not free), FreeCommander, AccelMan, ShelLessExplorer(not free) and now i'm stable with UltraExplorer (http://www.mustangpeak.net/subdomains/ultraexplorer/index.html) and its totally free.
It can import plug-ins of TotalCommander as well.
Basically, it has so many features of FreeCommander, but it is much stabler and more close to Windows Explorer.
best regards

Offlinexplorer2 is nice, though I dont know how it compares with other explorers. I tried, but eventually got rid of it because explorer replacements dont work with W7's libraries. It opens the windows explorer, THEN jumps to xplorer when you choose a folder inside a library. Very annoying. But this shouldn't be a problem on Vista and lower.

Its not free, but it does have a free lite version.
This is my first post on this particular forum but I would also suggest y'all look at my favorite shareware FM: http://www.xyplorer.com
It's not free but I've found it to be one of the best supported products ever!
We have a VERY active user forum at http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/index.php and the author participates often.
I used xplorer2 lite before I found XY (and still do on rare occasion) but now have XY active all the time I'm on my PC…I now maintain a blog with updates to XY (which occur almost daily!) at http://xyplorer.blogspot.com but I'm not getting anything financially from XY…I actually have donated via PayPal each year to the author, Don Lessau as I appreciate his efforts.

I found a link to a giveaway of an old version of Directory Opus (Version 6.2) on Raymond's forum that you might want to check out. The links are still active, so if you want to give the old version a whirl, you might want to check it out. The download link is on the forum page below:

Hope this helps.

I don't know your OS, but if you want the OLD Windows Explorer that came with 3.11 to 98, here's a link to winfile.exe. Simple, drag and drop, 244KB. Works in Windows XP as a stand-alone app.
If this doesn't work for you, then FreeCommander is a terrific option, as the other posters have stated.
