Here's what I need:

  • A free software solution
  • Ability to backup to networked drives
  • Ability to do full backups
  • Ability to do incremental backups
  • Ability to turn off live backing up
  • Once again, free

If I don't like the software solution proposed I'm considering upgrading to Windows 7 Professional for $80 (at Amazon).  Suggestions?

I can't think of anythingnthat does all of those. But why Win7Pro? I know that it has the built-in backup system, but from what I've heard it is very slow compared to other commercial software. Why not something like Acronis or Paragon?

Have you checked out the suggestions on Gizmo's site? If not, why not have a look and see if any fit the bill: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-backup-program

Todo is mostly for backing up entire drives, and supports incremental backups.

I have Backup4All (from Ashraf's contest) and it seems to work great for file backups. I think they also have a free version. Not sure what the differences are. But I can do full, incremental, to network drives, scheduled backups, etc. Worth checking out, IMHO.
