Does anyone know what programs to use, and is there a tutoral somewhere? I don't have photoshop.

Try PhotoScape. It has a feature which allows you to turn images and animate them into GIFs. Since PhotoScape image editor is not as powerful as say GIMP, if you need you can always create your images using some other software and throw it into PhotoScap to animate.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself properly. I want to make a avatar. I have a video that needs to be cut down to a few seconds, resized and then looped. Does that make sense? What program would I use to do this?

Oh okay. Use FormatFactory to convert and resize your video (use "All to GIF" under video). And it should loop automatically since it is a GIF. If not let me know and I will try to figure out how to make it loop.

Nah, that didn't work. The programs I used were, FFDSHOW, VirtualDub, and Photoscape. And this tutorial. Had to replace Adobe ImageReady with Photoscape.

Really? Out of curiosity why didn't FormatFactory works? It allows you to convert videos to GIFs and choose the size (and/or crop).

I had another go with FormatFactory and got it going this time. Don't ask me what I did the first time cause I don't Know
. I did notice however that the video quality is very poor with FF. I will have another go at it a little later and see if I can fine tune it.

GIFs are by nature 256 colors. The SW might not have picked the right 256.

If you really want to have a higher quality, I'd look up how to make APngs. (Still haven't found an easy way, and they also don't work in some browsers, IE included)

It lools like the APngs your talking about are if you want to make something from scratch. I just want to use an existing video.
Still couldn't get the quality to improve in FormatFactory. I'll just stick with the other way I found for the time being.
