I need a free program that will allow me to remote to another PC

My father is very smart but when it comes to computers he isn't that sharp. He often calls for help and trying to talk him through things is frustrating and tiring. I would like to be able to click on a program to get access (with his permission) to his PC. We both have the exact same computer. (An HP with Windows 7 Premium)

I have had jobs in which our tech support dept. will 'lan-desk in' or 'remote-in' and I get a pop-up asking for permission and then I just watch them do the work. Now I want to do that for my father.

Are there any free programs that will allow me to help my father like that?

Depending on what you need you might also try http://www.logmein.com as it will allow you to connect to his computer through their web site once you install the server component on his computer. Then you can access it anywhere you have a web browser available.

Teamviewer has a native Linux version, which I've used to run a remote Windows7 machine from my 8 year old Ubuntu machine. (I used Skype to get the complete teleconference experience, on the cheap.) The paid version is too expensive though.

I do remote support for my customers all the time. My preference is for UltraVNC because of all the features. It has a chat, file transfer and a lot of other features. It doesn't require any action by the user, you can remote in any time you want. The only thing you need to do is open his router port #5900 to allow access to his computer.

I also recommend TeamViewer – Ashraf has good taste!

I use TeamViewer to help my neighbors when they see weird virus pop-ups or other scary PC messages.

I also use it to run my 2 PCs with one monitor & keyboard. Easier than swapping back and forth between two keyboards and hitting the input switch on the monitor. I like its file transfer capability and it's fast!

Been using it for several years now, very reliable.

I was told there would be no math...
