KAREN Thanks for that. Your environment is entirely different to mine, I only have 1 gb Data allowance here in New Zealand, which is quite adequate if used sparingly. Also, speed is a major advantage with email clients.

LOCUTUS Thanks, got the file, just out of interest what did you do to the file to make it work. I used the file from the official site, which worked because I use Tbird v2.0.0.23

RAMESH   Win Xp Pro 32 bit is the only OS I bother with, perhaps I might change over to Windows eight in Oct 2012, when MS have ironed out all the problems with changing over to a new kernel. Many people consider Microsoft as monopolistic, and exploitative, so adopt the policy of boycotting anything by them.  Classically, people should not have to pay for an upgrade from Vista to 7, because Vista was so seriously flawed, that many considered it deliberate, so MS effectively charged double for 7. Would you accept this from Sony, Ford, Gigabyte, your plumber, etc, obviously no, so why with Microsoft. I wrote this last bit for the Commerce Commission, very thought provoking.

T bird and Firefox are sister apps, but run independently. Firefox I definitely recommend, but T bird is run by smartarses, and all the indications are that they are going to wreck the project. Mr Smartarse is a viscous companion.

What are your parameters for an email client, eg Karen's are totally different from mine.

I cannot post the extracts from my manuals, that you need, on this site, as they are too big. You will need the T bird manual, or you will get the new version which is problematic, and I do not support.

Presently think I will stay with T bird, but use Incredimail when I want a fancy email, which I will transfer to T bird for sending.

Have you decided on Thunderbird or Pegasus as email client? I got your point about the weakness of Outlook Express relating from its being baked into the OS & therefore to look for a non-OS email client, at least for WinXp Pro 32 bit. Do let me know which one is better & why - Thunderbird or Pegasus & which version. All I know is Thunderbird & Firefox are sister apps. Interesting work you are doing on developing a better way to build systems. I am sure it would be a nice thing

I do use Outlook at work, but obviously have no need for smilies there.

I don't use lots of smileys, but when I feel the need I just get by with the text equivalent rather than the graphic.

just having one of my lazy days, playing on my computer till 1 am. I downloaded Mailtagger 1.7, I got it through your link Locutus, but how do I tell if its the one

that works on V3, to future proof myself. Anyway, I tested it, and it gives me all I want.

1 Installs into Thunderbird v2.0.0.23 as an addon, so its easy to insert smilies.

2 Amazing amount of preinstalled good smilies.

3 Heaps more smilies availiable from http://www.kolobok.us/

Thanks everyone. Now I do not have all the problems of migrating to a new email client, as Incredimail. If only I had known to do a Thunderbird search for Mailtagger, instead of smilies, but that would have been inconceivable.

I can't use your download link to the modified Mailtagger, because it wants to install into Firefox. Please could I have a link to just download the file, then I can use it for other builds. I though there was a emoticons addon for Thunderbird, but as with a lot of things, one needs to know what to google.

I do see your point about emoticons, and really I just wanted something to give a bit of life, and definition to emails. Incredimail is completely overboard, and I will probably uninstall it after I have tried it out. Something like mailtagger or those Ramesh suggested, look more my style.

Incredimail is great for girlfriends, but not for business. Also, I guess it will use up a lot of my data allowance from my ISP. I don't have unlimited like you do in the States.

1 Re email client. I was advised back in 2005, by a super expert, never to use Outlook express or Internet Explorer, because it is used on mass by vunerable people, so hackers target it for nasties. Presently, I am aware of Thunderbird V2.0.0.23 being the only viable email client, V3 has many problems, so if you want the old version, email me direct, and I will send you an extract from one of my manuals, on how to get it.

2 Outlook Express being imbedded into XP does not make it safer, in fact just the opposite. Remember Sandboxie.

3 It is quite OK to have  more then one email client, but you can only have one as the default, which you set on installation.

4 Digital signatures, thanks I've put it in my manuals. I am however, working on a simple, foolproof, time saving method, to keep my operating system clean of nasties, and drastically reduce time spent on updating programs. I'll do the tests when I build my new computer, as it has 2 hard drives necessary for the system. I should complete this project about June 2010.

5 I suspect your original suggestion for emoticons, is probably going to be the most sensible for me.

Feels great to see you friend. Incredimail is definitely good & trustworthy. Many friends in real world as well have recommended it to me. I use only Outlook Express. My 2 reasons for having only Outlook Express was -

1. Being baked into WinXp itself I thought made it safer
2. Easier to manage emails by having one email client

My reasoning about "only one email client line of thought." could be wrong though. I do know other email clients offer better functionalities

Your query on "How to check nasties" - One additional way is to check if its digital signature is part of "User Controls Library". Digital Signatures being in Windows Explorer is no longer foolproof nowadays. Install Spyware Terminator 2.6.5.111. It has an excellent Digital Signature library. Stick to Spyware Terminator 2.6.5.111 for the present even though there are later versions.

@Ozzie:  That addon works only to Thunderbird 1.5.  The one I link to is a mod of one that works up to version 2, edited to work in version 3.

Smilie websites are dangerous, as for each smilie you download they give you a virus.

There are 3 safe ways:-

1 Download 91 Smilies from Yahoo. It gives you a cheatsheet of how to type out the Smilie.

2 Take it from Codex. It gives you a cheatsheet of how to type out the Smilie – it also gives good WordPress tips regarding Smilies. Our blogsite btw uses WordPress

3 Locutus our administrator in http://www.dottech.org taught me that if you type : followed by ) you get :) & if you type : followed by D you get :D

Problem is once you have done it, its done.
