Sorry for the long absence..... I did finally get Fast Folders to work, and without going into great detail, It's not for me.

Tried all the suggested apps, and I have found a winner. Folder Menu 3 comes as close to FolderGuide as I can reasonably expect. In fact, I may like Folder Menu as much or even more, once I get used to it.

Thank to all of you, and a big thanks to Leland!

Have you tried Filebox Extender as seen at http://www.hyperionics.com/files/index.asp The are x86 and x64 versions. I think this one will do what you want.

Next check out Folder Menu 3 at http://foldermenu.sourceforge.net/ I suspect however the free version may not provide all the functionality you want. It does support both x86 and x64.

Hopefully with all these choices you will find the tool you want.

No joy…….. Open++ isn't what I'm looking for at all. FastFolders might work, but all I can get it to do is open the config dialog when I click the menu item. Even after setting up favorites, I can't get the sub-menu to open, it goes immediately to the config.

This is probably because I have 'menu show delay' set to a very high number. I don't like sub-menus to auto open…………

I appreciate the links just the same.

FolderGuide was perfect for me. I set up shortcuts I open often, and they were available in almost every folder, on the desktop, in open & save dialogs…………

Hi Tejas!

Two issues my friend:-

It may be "menu show delay" or it could be something else! Sometimes a developer temporarily goes out of business but has plans to come back later. Since he does not want to get screwed by his temporary absence he codes his app for a timeout. During this point his apps misbehaves in some weird manner, as if to suggest that the fault lies not with the app itself but with the config settings made by the user. It is very difficult to find this out but the app comes away with a clean slate. Re-tweak your "menu show delay setting." See if it helps

I'm not exactly sure if this is what you're looking for, but there is a program called Open++ (http://dengdun.webs.com/en/openxx.htm). In the download links at the bottom, there is a download link for "Open++ for x64". Looks like it will work on Windows XP - Windows 7.

If you don't mind paying for software, you can get this:

http://www.desksoft.com/FastFolders.htm

This doesn't look much better than Open++, so it's probably not worth it.

Thanks so much......... I'll be checking out both programs.

At quick glance this is how the 3 apps seem to stack up:-

Folder Guide – looks to be a specialist app focused only on opening any chosen folder in just 2 mouse clicks

Open++ – does this but only if filepath does not exceed a certain number of characters. To its credit it also offers other functionalities

FastFolders – offers different functionalities from both the above. It shows file size, foldersize too

Nice find of apps Gvape

One very nice learning which this reconfirms. *Windows Explorer context menu is limited in size. If you keep adding new context menus (aka to your right mouse click) after a point some of the context menus you added long long ago get wiped out* So a context menu ultimately has been "coded" to hold only so many entries.

I wonder why Microsoft did it this way? I wonder if other OS – Linux, Mac etc suffer the same limitation?

Ramesh

Hi Jumbi!
I've downloaded to Xp32 bit Professional non-.NET. It offers several smart & awesome functionalities & navigation capabilities. I am enclosing these from its awesome help file. I hope it works on WinXp 64 too:-

Add: Brings up the
'Add Favorite Folder' -dialog which will help you create a new favorite folder.

Edit: Edit the selected favorite folder.

Delete: Deletes the selected folder from the list and from the system.
Note: The physical folder will not be deleted, it would only be removed from
the favorite folders context menu.

Sort: Sort the total folders by Alias (ascending or descending).

Up: Move the selected folder item up the list.

Down: Move the selected folder item down the list.

Refresh: Refresh the folder list.

Import: Import the saved data of Alias and Path.

Export: Backup the data of Alias and Path. You can restore the data
if something happens with your system.

Options: Open the options dialog to set options.

Help: Folder Guide's help documents.

Exit: Exit the Folder Guide.

Access a Favorite Folder

You access the "Folder Guide" menu by right-clicking anywhere in the
following:

    • File, Directory, Directory Background (right pane) of
Windows Explorer

    • Common Open/Save dialogs

• Desktop

    • Start Button

In the menu that pops up there will be a new item called "Folder
Guide" with a list of folders that you have added from within Folder Guide
or from within Windows Explorer context menu. Then you can fast and easy browse
these folders.

So instead of browsing through the filetree looking for a folder by hand, you
can get there in a second or two by using Folder Guide

Add a Favorite Folder

• From main application Start Folder Guide. Click the button "Add", a new dialog will
appear. Input the Alias of the new Folder Guide in the first field (this can be
anything since its only purpose is to describe the actual path of the folder
you want to select).

Click the button "..." and a "Browse For Folder"
dialog will appear. You can select the folder will be browsed to by Explorer or
an Open/Save dialog when you select it from the "Folder Guide" popup
menu. Click OK when done.

Back to the main window you can now see your fast folder and the path of
the folder.

• From Within Explorer (Context Menu)

This feature adds a right-click context menu for common folders called
"Add to Folder Guide".

It means that you may add a new folder by right-clicking a folder in
Windows Explorer and then click the menu item labeled "Add to Folder
Guide". The selected folder would be added to the Folder Guide.

You could try dragging things to the favorites section in Windows 7 and I believe in Vista too.

its not the same at all, cause FolderGuide gives "many favourite" folders at the same time and the user chooses which are these folders.

Very interesting soft, I will certainly test to XP and also look forward a win7-64bit alternative.

Thanks Tejas!

This is a dream of an app, extremely useful to me & I've immediately downloaded it. For a while I wondered if I had another "productivity app" which offered this functionality as well. But I don't have any app which offers this functionality. It saves hours of time & irritation on computer.

I use WinXp 32 bit Professional non-.NET & so am unable to offhand think of an app like this which works on 64 bit. I'll look out & let you know if I find one. Do keep writing.

I am sure there are very many other new members with a lot of helpful tips too. Do give us a chance to know you.
