I was browsing through MajorGeeks and I came across this. Simple user-friendly program that doesn't require much research, or manual tweeking. Be sure to read the faq because there will be an error the first time avira updates (and only the 1st time), and it might be falsely detected as a virus. It also supports the new Avira AntiVir 10.
I haven't actually used it yet, but from reviews from other sites, it seems reputable.
(This is for educational purposes only…I'm not encouraging you to use it…)

I read about this on gHacks. Sounds like an interesting program considering Avira seems to make their ads popup at the worst times.
That said, avast! doesn't have the same pop ups (at least I have not experienced them yet); food for thought
.
At one time I used & liked Avira AntiVir, but it became bossy, not letting programs run even after I confirmed that I wanted them to, or after I had gone into settings & did it there too. Also, it ran when it felt like it & wouldn't close or respond to task manager. It was like a bully
, or a stubborn child.
Getting rid of it, uninstalling, was a nightmare (esp before I had Revo) & it took many attempts to delete leftovers, & registry keys, & at times these items would refuse to be deleted--YOU DON'T HAVE PERMISSION, DUDE!!) In fact, years later, there is a grayed-out entry in the control panel, but to left-click on it gets: "application not found," (DUH), but the only 2 options when I right-click, are OPEN, which gets: "application not found," or "create shortcut," (ya, right, just what I need), hence, there is no DELETE!! So it is there, I guess, forever, (unless someone else has an idea).

*cough* MSE invades your privacy */cough*
It's true, I read it on other sites,
MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS INVADES YOUR PRIVACY!!! DO NOT DOWNLOAD!!!
In fact, it comes with its own little dirty trick; a spyware that keeps track of what you download (I think) and install (yes it does). So say I'm a bad boy (LoL) and I download a keygen for REVO Uninstaller PRO ($40… is a rip off). Then I do this and that and voila, my pro version of REVO for free! MSE will then record where I got that keygen and see that it's a working keygen. It then sends an email to the developer (I think) and tells them to patch 'em up so that the keygens will no longer work!
So… I don't think it's a good idea to install that crap on your computer… I think there's a similar thing on Vista that does the same thing. Some review sites are telling peeps to turn off the "let Microsoft collect information about your computer (oh don't worry, we won't steal your privacy blah blah blah" thing.

I have the same grayed-out entry in control panel too, except it's from Java. I have a 64-bit system and I can only access the Java control panel from the 32-bit section in the control panel. Are you sure it was from Avira?
Unfortunately, the useless icon is still there and I'd appreciate any suggestions here too.
